Keep in mind an after market deck is going to bypass the stock speaker amp. Will your speakers sound clearer? Yes. But more powerful/more bass? No. There actually going to lose a lot of bass. But I'm not a bass junky so i would definitely say its still going to sound better IMHO. Crisper highs. Clearer mids. A sub should definitely be in your future if you crave bass.

I have a '95XLE with the door tweeters and the external amp setup. I replace my HU. The door tweeters work fine as they are just wired inline with the lower door speakers, and my new HU puts out more power than the external amp in the factory setup, so my bass response improved.

Don't know how the 2001 system compares to the '95 system, but I'm betting your sound will be noticeably improved.

This may be true for the 3rd gens but i as well own a 4th gen with the jbl system and he is definitely going to lose a lot of bass. His pioneer deck is only going to push about 20 watts to each speaker where as the stock jbl amp does almost 50.

Ahh. That's substantially different than the '95 then. When I pulled the speakers out of my 95, they were all stamped as 15W, so I'm assuming the factory amp in the '95 was pushing 10-15W RMS tops. Adding my 20W RMS HU made a NOTICEABLE improvement in the sound across the board. Then I replaced the speakers after that for an even better sound.

So, in the '01, if you install an aftermarket HU with the factory speakers, you have to add an aftermarket external amp to stay at the same level of sound output you had with the factory HU? Is there anyway to run the aftermarket HU pre-amp outputs to the JBL factory amp?

Yes an after market amp would definitely make an improvement. I have seen kits to integrate stock amps with after market decks however not for the camry. I'm sure theres got to be a way though.

lol that stock amp doesnt put out 50w per channel, I lost a bit of ability to pump the bass up as much but it doesnt sound like absolute shit either. I took out my rears and put in a sub and the fronts can play pretty decently loud and clear

If the JBL system was advertised as a 200W system (i.e. 50Wx4) by Toyota, that would be referring to peak power which is relatively meaningless. The manufacturers quote peak power to make their systems sound like a bigger deal than they are. The RMS output is probably more like 15-20W which would be similar to the internal amps on most aftermarket HUs. As I noted earlier, my factory speakers were all labeled as 15W. If you look at the back of the speakers from inside the trunk, they may be labeled like mine were and you'd get a better idea of what the actual amp output is. I've never actually pulled my amp out from under the passenger seat. It may be labeled as well. Of course it's out of the loop now, because my new HU is powering my system.
