1992 Camry started chiming when key is turned off

Hi,

I purchased this Camry new in 1992 and only within the past month has it started making a rapid chiming sound when the engine is shut off and even after the key is removed. It seems to continue for at least 5 seconds after the key has been removed. I can't find anything in the owners manual about warning chimes so I'm not sure just what exactly the car is trying to tell me.

If anyone knows what it is or can venture an educated guess, I certainly would appreciate it.

Just a guess ... possibly a dirty or stuck contact within the ignition switch.
Try getting a spray can of electrical contact cleaner .... spray the ignition switch key aperture thoroughly .... rotate key several times ....
... Worth a try maybe.

I had the same issue and it was driving me crazy. It turned out to be my sunroof was opened just a little. Not enough to make any wind noise but enough to be detected and set off the warning chime.

Thanks for the quick responses. dc_98_cam: I put the electrical contact cleaner on my shopping list and in the meantime I received the response from wellsb1 regarding the sun roof. Went out and checked it -- it looked closed -- but I opened and closed it and sure enough, the chiming stopped.
