How do I replace the ignition switch in a 96 Camry wagon?

Hi folks,

The ignition in this car is in the dash, not the steering column. I've taken off the panel below the steering colum / dash, but can't figure out how to get at the ignition switch.

And how does the big connector disconnect? Is there a latch on it somewhere?

I'm pretty sure the problem is the ignition switch, because the car suddenly wouldn't start. I was able to get it to start by jumping the solenoid at the starter motor. But once it was running, weird electrical things were happening. If I activated the turn signal, the power locks would lock. I put it in drive, and the green transmission indicator "D" light would blink like it was a turn signal!

Then, when I turned off the car, one of the turn signals kept blinking.

So, do you also think the ignition switch is the problem, and if so, how do I replace it?

Thanks!

Cant give you any definitive answer ... Recall seeing forum posted problems similar to what you describe that were caused by the neutral safety switch ... which is located in the engine compartment, in the vicinity of the transmission case. ...The GEN 3 wiring diagram might provide additional information with regard to potential problem/solutions related to the NSS.

see p. 205 of Gen 3 wiring diagram ... part P1 ... Neutral Start Switch

please provide engine type and transmission type ... automatic?
