anyone have a squeaking compressor?

for the past 2 weeks now, my AC compressor has been squeaking. its pretty noticeable when the car is idling and the compressor is not running, but goes away if the defrost is on. what would cause the squeak from the pulley when its not running? any way to fix this?

Since it is noticeable only when the compressor is off (when you turn on the defrost it automatically turns on the AC) I tend to lean towards the AC clutch mechanism. If it were the AC bearing you'd hear it when the AC was on. If it were something with the belt or other pulleys you'd hear it whether the AC was on or off.

Just a thought,
Kep

dammit, just took the car out and the noise has gotten worse and now the noise doesnt change when the compressor kicks on. my guess its the bearings in the pulley. any way to access them to possibly grease them?

You need to replace the clutch bearing most likely. I think these are sealed bearings, so you can't lube them. Even if you could, it would not help for long. For your compressor (10PA17C):

bearing ($35): http://www.apairinc.com/detail.asp?part=440-948

clutch plate puller tool: ($15) http://www.tooldesk.net/ATD_3610.html

You will need some sort of puller to pull the bearing off once you pull the clutch plate and pulley.

You should double check your compressor model (Nippondenso) to be sure.
