3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Can anyone see with the OEM lights at night in their 98 Camry? When I turn my lights on they barely illuminate the road? Is that simply a poor design or do I need new lights?
Clean your lights and get Sylvania Silverstar Ultras to help you see farther & better, that should eliminate your "Night Sight" problems. If this has already been done or if this does not meet your satisfaction you can always get an HID Kit for your car.
I have the same problem with my 96. I switched to Canadian Tire's brand that's basically cheap, but really no difference, other than the color temp. I'm still finding I would like them brighter.
Eurolite Xenon Super Plasma Headlight.
They are supposed to have about 30% more lumens. But coming up the highway tonight, I really wanted more "bright lights".
This is how the headlight lens should look,
but after many years of UV exposure, most plastic headlight lenses will cloud up.
Just type "headlight restoration" using Google and you'll see a lot of products out there you can buy to polish the headlight lenses to take out the haziness.
The headlights on a 98 Camry aren't the best designs, but it should still light up the road decently.

Toyota-owner, how long have you had the OEM bulbs? All light bulbs eventually fade out and get dimmer as the years pass so most likely you need to get new bulbs. I recommend Sylvania Silverstars also. Big improvement over OEM bulbs.
Sometimes they get clouded on the inside too. There are many how-tos on taking apart your headlight to polish the insides in case polishing the outside doesnt help. you could get new ones of course, but they are quite expen$ive, so alot of people opt to heat them in the oven, take them apart and polish them.
Im not sure of the exact process but you use very fine sandpaper, not sure the number, then work your way down to rubbing compound and the clear should come back.
I used Plastic- X from Meguiar's on my gen 4 headlights and I can see much much better and I think that with a brighter bulb (Sylvanias perhaps) it will be fine, just like the other cars...
I f you do take them apart make sure that you seal them very very good, with just a little little leak you'll have condensation..
gen 4 headlights are just bad imo. I have sylvania xtra vision or w/e it is called and i cleaned up my headlights a bit and i can see decently
Sylvania Sliver Star ultras... well worth the money.
