3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am new to the whole modification, but I have a 1993 Camry 4-cylinder and I have a quick question about projectors.
I have an aftermarket pair of headlights and I was wondering from all of you veteran modders, which would be better?
Projectors that have been molded into the headlamp with HIDs, or just go with the aftermarket headlamps with HIDs?
Thanks for any advice.
obvious choice there. Never do HID without projectors

Eh... you're both semi-correct.
Correctly, never install HIDs into housing which is not designed for it. Only use HIDs in housing that contains either an HID reflector or an HID projector. Halogen reflectors AND halogen projectors are not designed for proper utilization of HID lighting.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

You're using big words that I don't understand. Dumb it down please.
Yes, I am being serious, and No, I'm not that much of an asshole.

gen3 u have to have projectors, but they are not bad in the gen4. i have them installed and theres little glare about the same as many early acuras, benzes and such were before they started using projectors. still id rahter projectors hands down.

ull need to learn the terminology here man, that cant be dumbed down.
HID=High Intensity Discharge
the reflector is used in housings that are without projectors if i understand it correctly. they are hard to fabricate and calibrate and its easier to just do a projector retrofit.

Haha, what I meant was that if you were to say... retrofit the HID reflectors from an IS300 into a Gen 3 headlamp (which I don't think is possible due to size issues, but I'm just giving an example), then that'd be fine. Otherwise, I don't recommend HIDs for any vehicle without proper HID optics (ie. projectors).

Thanks for all the info...I knew you vets would take it easy on a noob...thanks cd tran for the pics of the projectors, how difficult is it to mold projectors into the headlamp assemblies?
riddle me this .... my outback has reflector housings
so the bulb goes into that little pocket, then reflects to the headlight and out to the road .... why would it matter what type of bulb is producing the light, if the light is just gonna get bounced around before it reaches the road anyways?
im just wondering, because people say not to use HID in a reflector setup like that - but i dont see why one light would reflect properly and another light wouldnt

#1. Have a different point of light origin than whatever halogen bulb is in your headlamp right now (simply due to the fact that it's a different type of bulb), so your optics are already screwed up because of that.
#2. Are significantly more intense, so significant light will be reflected in directions which didn't matter as much before since your halogens are considerably less intense and stray light was previously unnoticeable.
