camshaft subgear

Working on a 97 5sfe. I rebuilt it about two years ago, but have been experiencing oil consumption. Finally the HG blew. Did a pressure check and 3 & 4 were down to nothing. Pulled the engine to replace the headgasket and find the pesky oil problem.

As I am taking off the head, I went to put the service bolt into the exhaust subgear, but it seems to be out of alignment with the main gear. Would this subgear misalignment cause a firing problem and thus my oil consumption? Is there any special trick to realigning the subgear and main after I take the exhaust camshaft out?

Excuse my impertinence ... but which instruction set are you using?
Are you going by the I4 Mechanical Section ... p. 37-38 ... online repair manual?

There may be two sets of markers on the exhaust cam, I ran into a problem reinstalling the camshafts in my Celica and got the timing way off. This will only cause the engine to not start however, it will not cause your oiling problem.

using the tsm eg1 50-51 for the camshaft removal.

removed head and checked head gasket...no apparent leak.

removed piston 3 & 4 which had problems. the alignment of the rings looks bad which I suspect caused blowby and the oil usage.

Camshaft subgear and main is still a question...how do you realign them so you can get the service bolt through as in TSM.
