3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok guys, I have searched for weeks, planning my attack for my camry. You guys with built 4bangers: N/A, Turbo, SC doesn't matter, list what you guys have done if you don't mind. I am trying to find parts and am not having much luck.
Take it from me as well as other the 5SFE is a very strong & reliable motor but as far as perfromance goes it sucks. IEther swap it out for a 3SGTE or a 1MZFE/3VZFE or if you have to money a 2JZGTE (I know that it would cost more money that it would be worth). I myself am doing a Half Swap with my 5SFE and a 3SGTE but it will be long and arduous and will more than likely give me hell along the way. You can Turbo the 5SFE but your gains will be minimal, Vortech & Rippmods have a stage 2 supercharger setup that claims 100% relibility and a decent Hp increase, as far as N/A you would use more money than it would be worth to get every ounce out of it. Id say the 5SFE with a correct Turbo setup would be at 350HP at the end, a supercharged setup at 300-325, and the N/A at 260-275HP. Now wat a 3SGTe Swap it can easily go to 350 with the stock turbo and some light mods. The V6 1MZFE & 3VZFE engines can create a little more power for the money oer the 5SFE.
Where is all that info and numbers coming from? With a turbo and a solid build the 5s could turn in a 300 with alot of work.
Those numbers with a super? You have to be kidding. Along with the N/A
The 5s is fairly cheap to build and is a fun car to drive if you are not all about winning against every car. Slap on some MR2 parts and a good suspension and go have some fun on the road

2JZGTE!?!? Wow....that's a name drop! The amount of fabrication involved in getting a long I6 block under the hood of a Camry's engine compartment....let alone converting the body tunnel to allow the drive shaft, customizing a suspension and axle for the RWD conversion etc would be insane. Might as build a real race car. Forget the 2JZ.
3SGTE sounds like the best bet. One day I will do the 3SGTE swap, but for now my Camry is too damn reliable.

RDizzle I gave out a ROUGH ESTIMATE I didnt claim those to be exact, I have no true Idea as that Turbo Camrys are rare as even more so wit the S/C & N/A. I was just trying to throw some educated guesses by some MR2 Fourms and some here at TN. If he is serious about making a custom build I wanted him to know what options and their POSSIBLE outcomes. My nubers were more than likely off but pinpoint accuracy wanst my goal it was general information that I was trying to give.
^330 is 300 i didnt say 300 flat. and he said correct turbo setup which can mean basic so if a 1mz which starts out that much above a 5s already turbos and gets to 330 the 5s still wouldnt get the 300s
^ a 5S-FE can also hit 300hp, but with much more put into it
360glitch has nothing but the turbo and some BASIC supporting mods
the 5S-FE would require a slew of supporting mods, but could still hit 300hp ... the reason its not done is because nobody wants to waste the kind of money on a Camry that you could be wasting on an AWD or RWD car that will actually post good times

I agree it is possible, I wouldnt rule out any possibility because with the right amount of fabrication and special materials it could handle a huge amount of power. But just a basic setup wouldnt put a 5s all too close to 300hp. I think spartan was giving him too high of estimates which could be very misleading because a correct setup doesnt need to include the huge amount of support mods to reach 300hp... i was mainly arguing against his numbers because he didnt say a highly modified 5s, but rather just a correct turbo which can be something like glitch's

Your numbers are a little high for what you would probably work it out to. Obviously there are TONS of variables like CR, boost pressure, supporting mods, etc. But, your numbers are about 100 hp off from being realistic for NA, supercharged, and turbo.
