Well, generally it isn't bs when the MIL is illuminated. Sometimes you may have a hiccup that will fail a monitor once and clear once it runs again, but it's certainly not the rule. And you've been misinformed about the check engine light. The OBD2 system is federally mandated in part to manage the emission system, but it also incorporates many other functions including the drivetrain and engine. There is no red check engine light. Every problem from the on board diagnostic system, be it emission related or otherwise, will illuminate the amber check engine light (the only one). The red lights on your indicator include the seatbelt, airbag, battery, and brake, none of which are related to the OB2 system.
