it's supposed to increase the fidelity of the sound, by using small speakers/tweeters that emit at certain frequency ranges. You get to a point though of diminishing returns. Meaning a 4 way speaker could sound like shit. Imo, I'd stick to 2 way or 3way; 4 way speakers, idk.

Another tip, dont buy speakers rated way over how many amps you'll be pushing. So since your deck will push 52w at peak, you dont need speakers rated any more than 60w. In fact they'll sound worse, if the wattage is rated too high. I'd go with Inifinties, JVC, panasonic(I've had some really good ones), or Kenwood. I'm sure I'm missing some.

I need some speakers, I blew my front driver's side speaker, sounds horrible. But that's what happens when you use a high powered deck on 15 year old stock speakers.

means how many speakers it has to take on different frequencies

a 2 way will have a midrange and a tweeter
3 way will have a midrange and 2 tweeters
4 way will have a midrange and 3 tweeters and so on

you really only need 2 so....

have you considered components? those are 2 ways, just that the tweeter is separate for you to mount elsewhere = better imaging and sound

2-ways, 3-ways, etc... the higher you go up the more crisp a sound you will get. Put it this way, if you want to hear more of a deep sound when you play your music get 2-ways, and if you want more voice then get a higher model. I've replaced all my interior speakers with 3-way pioneers and I'm loving how crisp they sound when i push them. I like to hear more voice rather than all bass.

Yes, you can fit 6.5s or even 6.75s in the doors, but you have to watch the mounting depth. You can look at http://www.crutchfield.com to get an idea of what will fit.

Yes, you can put 6X9s in the rear deck, but you'll need an adapter plate because the factory 6X9s have a non standard mounting bolt pattern. Some people make thier own out of MDF. I used these...

A good 2 or 3-way will do you just fine. 4-ways, 5-ways, in a single unit car speaker are more hype than anything else IMO.

If you don't want to add an external amp to your system, I'd recommend getting speakers that are rated as close to your stereo's RMS power rating as possible. Your stereo is rated at 4 X 17W RMS. The lowest rating I've seen on 6X9s lately is 35W. These Boston Acoustics are one example. I just installed them in my '95XLE.

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...i=065S95&tp=91

I'm not pushing the Boston Acoustics. I'm just pushing the RMS rating factor. I've seen many cases where expensive 60-100W RMS speakers were installed with a 15-20W stereo, and they sound awful because they're so underpowered. Then the person has to install an external amp to get the sound they thought theyd get just with the speakers.

IMO a good rule of thumb would be to look for speakers where the high end of the RMS rating is no more than double the RMS rating of your amp. In this case 17W X 2 = 34W, so a 35W RMS speaker would be about as close as you'll get in a 6X9.

Jensen and other manufacturers make 35-40W 6X9s, but you have to search a little to find them. Everybody promotes their higher power speakers because that's where the market is, and perhaps becuase they hope to sell you an amp to go with them.
