well, that sums it up, I'm trying to figure out what would leak oil on to my fuel rail and intake manifold. I thought my leak was from the pan, but today(since it's 60 degrees out) I was poking around and noticed a lot of what I would descibe as sludge on the intake. Any Ideas? Once we get into the actual engine, I'm pretty lost on the subject.
I'll go take some pictures of this.

definitely oil and dirt. I just checked my oil level too, and I was down about 3/4 of a liter. I hope it's something simple like the valve cover.
first over of the engine
little closer
Straight down from the top of the intake.
that's about it. I'm going to go check and see if any of the tube nuts are loose. Hard to take pictures, I was hoping I could use the camera as a probe of sorts...no too much shit in there

turns out, they were loose. Hope that's all it was. At first I couldn't think of how to tighten nuts that big, but then I remembered I have a 18" long adjustable wrench in my trunk. First 2 nuts 1/2 a turn loose, third was fine and the forth turned almost 3/4.
There's nothing else that would leak oil back there? Maybe injectors?

Um, I just started a thread yesterday for an oil leak. I too thought it was the gasket, until I saw your pics I went to take a look at my camry. Turns out my intake is covered in black goo as well. What tube nuts are you talking about? Are they the spark plugs themselfs? Also would I find the long wrench at autozone, pepboys, etc? Is it a socket wrench extension?
You pull the spark plug wires out and under the rubber is the nuts. The thing is, the nuts are huge, 30mm to be exact. You could use a socket, but it wont be cheap. I just happen to have the huge adjustable wrench because my father bought it to take the propeller off his Trawler . I borrowed a long time ago and subsequently it was in my trunk. Probably water pump pliers would work, I'm not quite sure what you're SUPPOSED to do here. Maybe you could borrow one from autozone or advanced auto.
Found a neat pic
apparently you're supposed to tighten them like you tighten an oil filter. Once the nut is snug you turn it another 30 degrees. I think I might go get a new gasket and do this over. Wish I knew this before hand, but then I've never seen valve cover bults like this before. At the same time then I'd know for sure whether this was the problem, might pick up some paint too

like I said I just didnt realize I had the tool needed all this time. Probably would have pulled the valve cover before out of curiosity. I always go after stuff like this because I worry about something leaking on the belts, namely the timing belt. ok, that and I have the dirtiest motor on tn. Thank you though, at least it's nothing out of the ordinary.

and they are 30mm nuts (i actually bought a socket for them since i dont like adjustable wrenches)
lol, I've got to take a picture of this wrench, not of the ordinary. I kept it in the car as my beat down stick, however if you hit someone with it anywhere above the waist, theyd be doa. A long time ago, I said well if I have to use it, I swing at the knees unless I'm staring down a barrel.

Today, I got everything done but change the valve cover gasket. I just didnt feel like going there. So I changed about 2.5qts of A/T fluid, first time I've ever done the fluid before in my life. Amazingly easy but took a long time to drain. Also washed the engine with simple green. It worked, but not like I would have liked. I think the reality is, it's never going to look good, seen too many miles and too much salt and red clay roads.
before
after
yeah I cant tell the difference either from the pictures. It does look better, but I need like a pressure washer to get the block, it's filthy.

Um, I attempted to remove my valve cover, I removed the nuts, the tubing, and tried to pry it with a putty knife. No go. I used a mallet to bang on it several times... still no go. I took a pic... is this removing the tube nuts? Did I forget to take anything else off? The thing won't budge
Ok guys, I finally managed to get it off, the gasket looked good... ehhh however now I didn't have a new gasket on hand. I wiped down the gasket as best as possible... on both the engine side and the cover. Then put the RTV silicone on the 8 points that the hayes manual says. Put the cover back on and replaced the nuts and the washers under them. Soo... I guess its not the valve cover after all.
