I dont think hes concerned about how the valve cover looks right now... he said it brushes off as easy as snow. I think hes more worried about WHAT the stuff is...
it doesnt matter what it is, because its on top of a metal casing ... so its not like its going to eat his engine alive or anything
thats why i said just sand it clean like i did and paint it .... it wont come back, and if it shows up on anything else then you may be able to find the source, if its not just oxidation or decay

i say its oxidation for sure, prolly accelerated by the coolant steam commin up. paint it and u wont have that problem. im surprised to see it isnt painted durrby, gotta get it to match the rest of the car's sexyness.
I was thinking coolant leak too, just wanted to ask. When I got the car the coolant reservoir was empty and the inside was all brown. (Oil mixing with coolant?) I filled it up as well as topped off the radiator and within 2 days the reservoir was empty again.
