car wont start

car: 1994 toyota camry I4 AT 154,xxx

i was on vacation for 2 weeks and the camry was sitting in the garage the whole time. when i came back to move the camry out of the garage it started up fine. this was on saturday. now monday comes and the cars been sitting on the driveway since saturday, i get in the car and turn the key and nothing happens. the lights in the gauge cluster turn on and the clock thats located on top of the a.c vents. when i turned the key the clock dimmed to where you cant see it anymore and when i turn the key back to the point where you can pull it out the clock comes back.(some sort of powerdrain?)

i tried cleaning the battery terminals and checked the wires, i also tried recharging the battery incase if it was low.

now what could be causing this problem? can someone please tell me what size battery should be used for this car for some reason the battery that i have just looks to small for the car. also can this be a problem with the starter?

forgot to mention that on monday when i started the car at first there was this clicking noise, but after a few turns of the key that clicking sound went away. now theres just no sound at all just a turn a of the key and no noise at all.

any help will be appreciated

you might need a new starter... They are not cheap, but before you get to excited replace the battery. It might not be holding its charge.

The battery size is group size 35. You can check this size for the number on your battery.

1 click indicates a problem with the contacts in the starter's solenoid. Do a search for "starter contacts" and read up on the problem as this has been covered many times. Multiple rapic clicks indicates a problem with the battery itself, corroded connections at the battery or the starter, or a problem with the charging syytem (alternator or loose alternator belt) not properly recharging the battery.

thanks guy. the problem was the starter so i got that fixed and also for some reason the mechanic said that my alarm was acting as a kill switch in some way. so he rewired that and now the car works fine.

I would encourage you to get him to write down (or tell you and you write down) exactly what he did on the alarm system. These systems are very temperamental and you may find it very helpful down the road if you end up having to trouble shoot it again. If the alarm system is working correctly, it is supposed to act as a kill switch when the car is being tampered with.
