'99 Camery Air Filter Upgrade

I drive a '99 Camry v4 2.2L Gen 4 (I believe). I'm looking at upgrading the air filter from the stock one to a performance air filter. I noticed that there is a sensor on the stock filter plastic casing. When I install the new filter that sensor woun't have a place to go. So what should I do with the sensor when I put the new air filter on so that the service engine light doesn't go on. Any help on this would be great.

wait...if ur just replacing the stock air filter with a performance one(K&N), then you wouldnt have to even mess with the sensors.

unless ur talking about replacing the stock intake with a "performance" intake. in which case i should only get one that has connections built in for the sensors. if the intake dont have them, ull have to find a way to get them on there.

Update

I put the new performance air filter on, a Spectre, and it works great. the sensor doesn't make the check engine light turn on even though it is just hanging next to the new air filter. I for got to add this to my orginal post but I noticed that there is a tube coming from the stock air filter (pastic case/box) that reads "ER > FPM < OUTER > ECC < .... ( I can't read the rest). It connects to the stock box after the filter ( So in the box theres the air intake from the front of the car, then theres the filter where the air is filtered, then right above that theres the tube coming into the box on the side). So, I'm wondering what this tube does, and if it's important. And whit the sensor just hanging will I have trouble passing a E-Test. I'm bring it by the my auto repair place to ask them if my new air filter setup is good or if I need to do any thing else. Id rather get this sorted out here then having to pay to find out if I hooked everything up right.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

What did you install? The Spectre web site doesn't list anything on an intake for a 99 Camry. That dangling sensor is probably your intake air temp sensor. It will not read correct intake air temp when hanging in the engine bay and if your state checks you may not pass emissions.

Heres a link to pic.s to go with my previous post.

I want to know what that tube is for and if I should hook it up to the air intake or if it is ok to leave it as is. And the sensor, it doesn't set the check engine light off so is ok to leave it there or should I get my intake sooner then later and hook it up to that. thanks

the hose goes to your emissions cannisters below the brake booster. that sensor and that hose both need to be hooked up. you 'COULD' (i say could with emphasis) drill a hole, mount the sensor and t the vac line in with the one going from your valver cover to the intake hose, however id say just check ebay and buy a short ram intake, mine was about 100 bucks, i have recently seen some for less. or else put the lunch box back and get a k&n

IM probly buying this new intake on ebay, from what i can see it should allow me to connect the tube to it but no place for the sensor, i gues i could drill a hole in the intake for it but ill first see about the tube. Also if i dont have the tube hooked up to the filter will my car still run ok till i get the new intake?

the larger of the three bungs is for your sensor, the other 2 are for the vac hoses... i wish i coulda found this one when i bought mine, hell of a lot cheaper and has all 3 fittings where mine only had 2 so i got mine "t'd" together...

It sounds better then my old filter and my car seems to have a wee bit more get up and go. And can some tell me if i can leave the tube that goes to the emissions cannisters below the brake booster detached from an air filter or intake (like it is in my pictures). Ill only have it like this for like a week maybe while i wait on my new air intake. respond quickly I have to drive like a hundred miles to day, i dont want to break down. THanks

Take the Valve cover tube off and replace it with an oil breather (basically small cone filter)

I have a Spectra Cone filter with their universal intake tube kit and works well. But I would rather buy the APC Universal Intake kit, its a lot cheaper and basically the same.
