3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
As luck would have it I have probably the worst problem to date.
So when I start the car, it take much longer to start than normal. After that it idles just fine, but probably take up to 2sec. to fire. Then while driving everything is fine, but when I stop at a light and then accelerate she almost quits. then back to normal. wtf, so I decided maybe it's the distributor. Looked fine, pulled every plug, all look fine, wire are old, but it really I have a feeling this problem isnt this simple anyway.
It doesnt do it at every light, heck I went to advanced auto just to get some kind of opinion and it wouldnt do it. It stalls in park too, btw. So I've been reading a bit on here(searching) and not really finding this kind of problem. It idles fine all the time and when I get on the gas after it stalls go like a champ. So I'm really confused.
Some other hints, my air filter is good
I might need a new fuel filter....been a while, but this is the first problem
I put seafoam in my tank tonight
It started today and up till then gave absolutely no indication of a problem.
edit; probably important, the car has 127,000mi and is a 92 LE with a 5sfe

I would first check the IAC valve. Since you’re in that area, the throttle body and EGR system could easily be checked at the same time. All three will likely need to be cleaned. Why not clean the PCV as well (no relation but good to do)
In the Engine section of the on-line manual, there is a 5SFE trouble shooting chart on EG1-327 that has an engine stall section which suggests: IAC valve system (noted 4 times on the chart) EG1-415; MAP sensor circuit (two notes) EG1-372; ECM (two notes) IN-36; Fuel system EG1-419; “Switch Condition Signal Circuit” EG1-396; and Injector system EG1-410.
I tend to expect a fuel filter problem to show itself at high RPMs first, when the engine requires more gas per second. I would think that at low RPMs the filter would have to be almost completely obstructed to have an effect. Not sure but that's my logic.

Often, it's the loose screw between the steering wheel and the driver's seat that needs to be fixed first!
do a tune up replace the cap rotor and wires plugs if you say they are old, they should last 8 yaers(oe wires)also replacethe coil and static condenser next to the coil,(im thinking the problem is the coil)also get a o ring for the distubuter shat,
Oe Coil Last About 13 To 15 Years, what Happens Is There Is A Hair Line Crack And When It Heats Up It Opens And Causing The Shutter,if The Car Is 96 And Under Im 100% Its That,
