Changing the timing belt

Hello All,

I'm attempting to replace the timing belt in my 99 Camry V6 for the first time. Just trying to compile a list of other things that should be replaced at the same time:

1) Timing belt
2) TB tensioner spring
3) Timing Idler Gear/Bearing (Upper and Lower)
4) Water Pump & Gasket

Should I replace the thermostat also? Anything else you can think of?

Thanks

depend on the mileage, if you think the crank shaft seal, cam shaft seal, oil pump seal, oil pump o-ring seal are due, replace them as well, parts are cheap, and since you there, only a few more minutes to change rather than start over again later.

look for drive belts like ac belt, power steering pump belts as well.

How often should the oil pump be changed? Just wondering if I might as well replace it also.

Also, can you recommend any special tools that I may need to replace and adjust the timing belt?

i have not replace any oil pump, and i am not aware of any time or mileage interval for oil pump replacement. i've taken apart the oil pump to replace the oil pump o-ring, and clean the holes in oil pump, but besides that, i dunno.

any moving part is subject to wear and fail, i could only think of the bearing/shaft on the oil pump might fail.

Marc, from what I understand there are two parts to the timing idler: An upper and a lower timing gear/bearing. Is that right? I've been able to find these parts on the Internet like www.partstrain.com.

Part: 024-1176 and Part: 024-1118

Also, do you think it would have been useful to have one of these special timing belt tension / compression tools? I've seen the following on ebay:

Oil pumps usually last the life of the engine; on occasion the oil pump seal on its pulley drive shift will leak.

The manual states the tensioner can be removed to retract it then pinned to keep it retracted until reinstalled or use a pry bar.

The parts appear to be the correct ones; they may also sell a complete kit. These parts are readily available as Toyota made lots of these engines.

Taking off and installing the crankshaft pulley bolt can require a large bar and method to hold the pulley stationary. If the pulley needs to be removed use the style that bolts to the pulley or it may be damaged. Make sure you know how to realign the timing marks on all the pulleys when putting the belt on.

Changing the T-stat is cheap insurance, as the coolant will be drained inspect and replace any questionable hoses

Should I get a steering wheel puller to do this as Marc suggested, or is there a better tool to safely remove the crankshaft pulley?

Also, can you please recommend what type of torque wrenches will be needed for this job and also provide a little more detail on the "large bar" that will be needed get the crankshaft pulley bolt off?

Thanks!

Wow! These Toyota Special Service Tools are amazingly expensive!! The tools just to get the crankshaft pulley bolt off are over $200. And then the puller set tool to get the pulley off is $639. I've got to figure something else out.
