Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought a used 98 Camry XLE V6 from a used car dealer. I only got a key from him and he does not know whether my car has a keyless entry sytem or not. I called up a toyota dealer with my vin # and they said that my car has a factory installed keyless entry system.
I see a red light in the dashboard(beside the tachometer) the letter beside which say "security". Can anyone help me what type of keyless entry my car has? I tried looking under the power mirror switches and under the seat but could not find any?
Does anyone have a picture of the keyless entry module in a 98 Camry XLE V6? that may help me finding what kind of system i have?
Your XLE model has a keyless entry and a security system. It came standard on the XLE model in 98. The remote is the one in prjkt_c4mry's picture. The back of it says MODEL FCC ID G043VT7T along with TRWISC 1470K1381. You may be able to pick one up along with programing instructions from an aftermarket source. Try this one:
I just wanted to add an FYI. With the seccurity system on the XLE model, your key has a chip in it. If you need to make additional ignition keys you will probably have to go to the dealer for the keys and also have the dealer program them, unless the procedure is listed in the stickied Toyota factory service manual. You can have all-metal keys made and they will open the doors, but they will not allow the starter to turn when you try to start the car with one of them. When my wife and I had a 98 XLE we each had 1 of the 2 factory ignition keys that came with the car. We also each had an allmetal key made and kept it in our wallets as backups. We left the valet key in the ashtray. If we ever locked our keys in the car somehow or lost our main igniton key, we could open the doors with the allmetal key and get the valet key out of the ashtray and start the car and drive home.
Might be the Securikey+ system like mine has(orig factory) They are available at the dealer for around $40 ea, and prog is usually $40ea also...I was just given a set of instruction for programing them yourself...Hope this helps
Hey mike and paul,
Thank you very much guyz, the info u guyz have provided has helped me a lot. The info regarding the chip in the key was very helpful. I just got only one key when i bought the car from the dealer. I think I would pick up a pair of extra keys on the net and program them myself. hey, by the way do any of you guyz have the programming instructions for the keys? and also how do i know if my key is a valet key or the normal key. Thanks a lot guyz!

You could try to download one of the online Toyota factory service manuals for the programing instructions, if they are still working.
As far as the difference between the regular key and the valet key, in addition to what touringcamry stated in his post, the valet key is dark gray in color; the regular key is jet black.
