3rd Generation 5SFE Cam Cover Gasket Replacement ?

Just wondering what people have been using for the 8 spots on the cylinder head where the Toyota factory service manual calls for FIPG. How are these other sealants holding up? I actually have an old tube of FIPG, but it is so old and hard that it can be used for a weapon. I don't really want to buy another tube of FIPG at Toyota's prices, just for this job.

Thanks for the feedback.

Mike

FIPG is a common sealant like RTV, available at auto parts stores for a reasonable price. Ask the sales clerk to find it for you.

Mike, didn't even realize that was you. I thought you knew everything, lol

I've been using the RTV silicone with success, clean the mating surfaces well, and of course torque the spark plug tubes to 17ft/lb

Not according to my wife.

I know that FIPG is the recommended sealant according to Toyota. I just wanted to know if anybody has had good results using something else. A tube of FIPG can be pretty expensive, especially since about 95% of the tube is probably going to sit and rot in my tool box, after changing the cam cover gasket.

Try Permatex Hylomar HPF gasket dressing and flange sealant (at auto parts stores). Works good on valve cover and trans pan gaskets and is very low cost.
