4th Generation Tail Light - Bulb 904 Won't Fit!

Hi,

I'm trying to change the tail lights (the ones next to the back-up lights on the trunk) on a 1998 Camry. According to the manaul, bulb 904 should do the trick. However, once positioned in the socket, the unit is at such a crazy angle that it won't go back in the hole. The bulb seems very large for this size hole. It just barely fits if I push it through by itself.

For background, the bulbs I removed were of type 194. I think the previous owner may have had the same problem. They work, but are somewhat dimmer. Additionally, the "lights out" dash indicator is illuminuted while using these bulbs. When I plugged in the 904's, the indicator is not lit.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

IIRC, bulb 168 is a higher wattage bulb same dimensions as the 194.

Off the top of my head, 194 is 4 watt, 168 is 5 watt. I ran into this replacing some dash panel lamps and found my 2 new 168 bulbs were much brighter than the new 194 bulbs because I bought all the 194's off the shelf at the store.

Thanks for your help, guys. I haven't tried the 168's yet, but won't I still have the same problem with the lights out indicator being illuminated? I'd still be shy on the recommended wattage. I checked the 904's and they're apparently 8.97 watts versus the 5 watts for the 168's. I assume that's why the indicator is lit. Am I wrong with this assumption?
