Canada 1997 Camry LE whistling whine from under hood under load

Hi

Re: whistling whine from under hood under load. Belt like sound.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this sound?

It starts at approx. 2200rpm up to 3000 then stops.

It only does it as I accelerate throught that range. If at any time I ease up on the throttle, it stops making the noise.

Could it be a vacum leak? If so, where/what.

Timing belt done 2 months ago.

Also removed serp. belt to see if it was the alternator or A/C....not it.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Pete

Good Morning,

It is a 4 cylinder, auto trans.

Performs flawlessly, but has the sound.

Thank you JJJJJJ, you put me on the right track.

We put her up on the hoist and raised the front off the track. Put it in gear and I jabbed the accelerator up to 3000 rpm repeatedly while the mechanic walked from one end of the exhaust system to the other.

Turned out to be a partially blown baffle inside the muffler which is normal on an old car but the whistle is just a fluke I guess.

He says it could eventually blow the whistle away and still be a good muffler for a long time.

Evidently the original Toyota mufflers are much more durable than the average after-market issue.

Anyway, nothing to worry about for now and the future will bring a new muffler in time.

The muffler is located in the rear of the vehicle. Far from the "whistling whine from under hood under load. Belt like sound" you mentioned. Exhaust leaks make a very distinct sound, doesn't matter what vehicle it is. Make sure the tbelt wasn't overtightened. The 5sfe doesn't have an hydraulic tensioner for the tbelt. hopefully the wp was replaced during tbelt service.
