3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've got a '98 LE, with stock suspension. I'm interested in replacing struts because when I hit a pothole or speed bump or basically any bump in the road, I hear a loud clicking like the struts are completely shot. I'm thinking of replacing the struts with KYB GR-2 because I figure while I'm replacing them, I might as well go with a slight upgrade. I have found them for $230 for 4 struts (front and rear) on ebay. Do I have to replace the springs as well? I don't want to lower it though, just make for a much smoother ride with less bouncing and better handling.
My questions are these...
1. Does the analysis of the blown struts sound reasonable?
2. Is the price reasonable for a set of 4?
3. Do I have to replace the springs?
4. Any suggestions for basically stock springs with possibly a slight improvement without lowering?
5. Would you recommend this as a DIY project?
6. Can someone provide a link for a Do-it-yourself suspension replacement?

I have the same questions, only with a '92. Any suggestions?
Another member suggested pushing down on the trunk of the car and seeing how much it bounces before it settles again. If it is really spongy, then you most likely need new struts. I have KYB's and they're a little stiffer than OEM but not by much. I think you should be fine using these with your stock springs.

1) The clicking you describe is more likely strut mounts going bad or if coming from the rear, possibly your sway bar bushings. If your struts are shot the car will be very bouncy like it's only riding on the springs. Bounce each corner of the car by pressing down on it hard and fast and then releasing it. If the car bounces multiple times before it stops then that strut may be bad. If the strut is working, it should dampen the bounce almost immediately.
2) KYB-GR2s would be around $320 shipped from TireRack.com They're not the cheapest, but a VERY reliable retailer, and REASONABLY priced. Use them for reference and make sure you compare the "shipped" price from eBay.
3) No, you don't HAVE to replace your springs. If you're happy with your ride and you don't want to lower it...
4) H&R OE Sport springs or Eibach Pro Kit springs will give you much better handling but only lower you an inch. You can find both at TireRack.com
5) Read the DIY below, and decide for yourself. Pay particular attention to the part about using spring compressors because you CAN get hurt.
so im about to get some sprint springs i have a v6 cam, with 18's is that a good combo?? and venom mentioned that with sprint the wheels sag??? what does he mean by that??? and would anyone suggest me getting sprint??

I would get a better quality spring then sprint. Venom meant that they sag over time and look weird. I would get a decent combo of tokicos and a spring from a high quality manufacturer.

According to Toyota's parts list, here is the difference on the 92/93's SE's stock suspension:
Front:
Only the top mounting plate! (That's weird...) However the steering rack is a whole different part number than the LE & XLE(!!)
Rear:
Different part numbers for the shocks, springs, and anti-sway bar than the LE & XLE.
Alloy rims all around.
BUT, what do these different part numbers mean? Do these parts lower/stiffen, the ride? How do they improve (and I'm guessing here!) the handling; ride?
I have a quick question. I'm thinking about getting Tein Springs for a Gen1 Solara, which I've been told will fit on a Gen3 Camry. Will I need to get new struts, shocks, or anything else to get this babys to fit or will they fit using the stock step up of the Camry?
Thanks,
Anthony
