3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey, I am new to toyota nation and wanted to get plugged in. I had a few questions concerning my car. I have a 2001 Camry and want to do some major overhauling. I dont have the money but want some ideas. I want to make it into a sleeper car. When its all done I want it to have 300+Hp if possible. i also dont want a turbo but would be open to a supercharger. I have a 4 banger auto. and i just want some advice on how to modify it. I am currently making a list. Thanks
First off, search. There is a lot of info on this subject.
As far as superchargers, Rippmods used to make a centrifugal supercharger kit that could produce about 240 whp, but this is no longer made and hard to find. Turbos on these engines if done right along with the right internals can give you 300whp. I used to be like you and dislike turbos and like superchargers, but the fact is that the turbo is more feasible and can give more power. Other than that you could swap in a 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6 and TRY to find a TRD roots supercharger, but those are also rare. You could also be balla and try swapping in the 1MZ-FE and put a Garrett GT40R turbo on it, ask TonyTheTiger, he'll tell you what's up with that

you wont get your 300whp goal like that. you are going to need a good overhaul of the engine, you will need a transmission overhaul, you will need a turbo unless you are planning on making your own crazy supercharger and blowing n02 out your butt like crazy.
sorry but you are on completely the wrong car for getting 300whp on an i4 with no turbo
Well What if i machined the pistons and shaved the heads? also adding new exhuast and headers along with a performance chip would have to get me somewhere. I dont know entirely too much but the swappng for a V6 does sound more feasible
^ The ONLY way to get 300whp on the 5S-FE is turbo and built up internals, end of story. Swapping to the 1MZ-FE could be another story, but I personally have limited knowledge with that, and the only superchargers for the V6 that I know of are the TRD superchargers which are rare and expensive.

Hell if I know, I've never actually done it. I think I've heard people saying that the T3 and T4 are good for the 5S-FE, I think they're made by Garrett.

Well i meant i dont have the money at the moment will soon since its a project i am starting. I was just going to buy a repo-ed supra but decided to wait and get the car later and use a little money on this camry. I cant wait to be ghetto ricer
being serious here, if u want 300+ hp with what u have now. be prepared to spend thousands to get there. there are many 5sfe(4cyl) guys who spend plenty on a turbo and are happy with 250, and they ususally have 5 speeds. u wont see 300 whp with out a turbo, and the ripp mods superchargers are extreamly rare.
read this and then decide if u wanna take the plunge.
I guess that is the true. Its hard to tune camrys. But i just wanted to keep up with my friends. One friend has a Mustang cobra with 480hp another has a nissan sentra which is about to become 300hp once he puts in his turbo. And another thats has a firebird with about 300hp. Its tough being the 4 door grocery getter.
some usefull advice...u want to keep up with ur friends? get a camaro Z28. 300hp and it will teach u alot about cars because ull be maintaining it alot., but its cheap as dirt. other then that jsut lightly mod yours and save for a faster car or a big build up.
just do some suspension work and maybe an exhaust and intake. you wont gain any power really but you will handle well and sounds good. im sure a few might want to argue this but generally the 5sfe isnt capable of being that big of a powerhouse without HUGE amounts of work
sorry, coming from someone who is doing it, turbo is your only route, and only if you spend an ass ton. 250 would be safe with alot of money, 300+ will be half what you have spent again.
And the rippmod super sucked, it produced maybe 190hp to the wheels if you were lucky and was prone to leaning. Super would be an ok bet, but look at 210hp max, and the custom work will put its HP per dollar cost exceptionally high.
Just lettin' ya know
