4th Generation How to install twm shifter in a 99 camry?

Ok, so I tried browing on here but I cant find a detailed walk through or tutorial on how to install the twm short shifter in my 99 camry. The instructions that come with it are for a corolla and not much help. Really just stumped with the best means of taking the center console apart to get better access to the shifter.

it's pretty easy after you take the shifter assembly out....

pick up a haynes manual and it'll let you know how to get that out...after that, you should be able to follow the instructions

I got a haynes manual but didnt see any real clarification on how to remove the center console section back by the armrest. Dont see any screws in the holder and theres fabric in there and not sure how to remove that without messing things up

^ there are 2 screws underneath the carpet inside the armrest holder

and then there should be two more under the shifter boot once it's removed, then a couple on the sides of the console

after that, pull backwards and upwards to slide it out from the centerdash console piece

you should be able to do it by just removing the shift boot and the trim around it... thats how I did it on my solara. That is just held in by clips, didnt have to remove any other interior parts.

I think the actual shifter assembly should be the same- there is a pin that runs through the assembly with a snap ring on the end. That will be the hardest part to get off and youll probably lose or break the ring in the process, but its pretty straight forwards from there.

^ damon...you installed yours while the shifter assembly was still in the car?

lol...I took mine out....maybe that's why it was so easy...after I got the shifter assembly out of the car though.

^ yeah, I guess thats the noob way to do it? I managed to leave the center console and the shifter assembly in, all I removed was the shift boot...

Id snap some pics for you but my car is still in the shop.

There is a walkthrough on the TWM site. However, after helping my brother install the short shifter in his 2000 Corolla, I had no problem installing the one in mine without the directions. Once you get the center console out (and it's an easier install if you do) it's pretty straightforward.
