3rd & 4th Generation (19921996 & 19972001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The engine of my 1992 Camry (2.2 4cyl) died (again !) and I am looking to buy a used one.
This engine is the 5sfe and I was wondering if it was possible to put a 2.2 engine from a 1996-2000 Camry. Is this exactly the same engine ? Is there a difference in power ? Are there any differences with the engine of the previous model ?
My car is a manual one and is 210,000 miles.
Thank you in advance for your help, any comments are welcome !
Someone told me this would not be possible as 1996 engines and later work with an ignition system and not a distributor, but as I already have all the parts from my previous engine to put them on, is it really not possible ? Or is the engine block itself too different.
Sry to hear about your problems wiht the 5SFE, If i am ccorrect from 92-96 they used the same block so you should be fine. I don't think the distributo should be an issue since you are jsut dropping in the block.
On another note....I'm interested in the internals of your messed up 5sfe, what went wrong with it? Sry if its too soon to ask but i've been looking everywhere for 5sfe internals, thanx.
To be honest I don't know what broke, I had a strong noise like glang glang glang and I first thought it was the cylinder head but after having dismantled the cylinder head and not having seen anything, it appears to be somewhere inside of the engine. Also, (sorry I don't know the word in English) there was a small scratch in one of the cylinders (but extremely light though so this can't be the origin of the problem). If you need some parts from it no problem !
yea as soon as you can figure out what went wrong let me know, but it sounds like it might have been rod knock, and i was very interested in the rods but keep me upto date and let me know what you can find out.
No problem well I'll say it in French (perhaps it might help) :
1st problem : "chemise" griffιe (scratched)
2nd problem : very likely to be a broken "bielle" or something like that.
Well to be honest I have been thinking about that but these engines are f... expensive ! have a look on ebay and you won't be able to find any for under than 1,500 $ !!
I'd love to have a turbo though but I fear that I also risk to have some problems for the yearly technical inspection of the car (car is registered in Great Britain) as they could ask me to put an original engine back on it !!!
