3rd Generation Gen 3.5 Camry V6 Engine Noise

Dear all,

My 95 Camry Gen 3 has about 90k on it. Need some help with some peculiar sounds.

1) During each start up,i let it idle, and once the RPM drops to 1.6 i move off.
As the vehicle moves , there is a sound from the right hand side of the engine.
Sounds like a stepper motor i.e a winding sound that last for about 3 seconds.
Does not re-occur again until the next start up.

2) Engine hot, traffic jam. I hear a soft knocking noise. Could it be that the iginition timing is off. I recently changed all the plugs.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you

1) prolly a worn belt

2) timing belt. 90K is about teh time it needs to be changed. also change the water pump at teh same time.

car runs like a LEXUS

Honestly, i have been amazed by the way the car is built and run.

I just bought this car about 2 months back.

Timing Belt was done by a Dealer.

Perhaps it's the ignition timing, ... engine knock ?? Need to go buy a timing light and check it out.

Has anyone done this before ?

people have, a timing gun will tell ya if its off. but unless the dealer didnt get the timing right when they did the timing belt then i cant see how ur timing is off. but if they didnt get it right then u would have noticed this problem immedatly, especially if its running right, bad timing would result in sluggish performance. how well did the previous owner take care of the it? possibly a sticking valve, my old 95 V6 did the same thing but it was around 114k, and thats what it was.

I'm not sure what a winding sound is or what a stepper motor sounds like. Check for loose belts (I'm not too suspicious of the timing belt since it is relatively new.) What other parts did Toyota replace with the belt? Might be a failing idler pulley.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to do the Sea Foam cleaning routine. Use it through your vacuum system to clean the fuel system. Use it in your gas to clean the injectors and some of the other fuel system parts. Run it in your oil for 100 miles or so before your change your oil. Do a search on this forum and GEN 1&2 forum for "Sea Foam" and "Seafoam" for many discussions and videos on how to do these.

The seafoam through the brake booster line is the ticket to getting a smooth running engine.
