1999 camry radio problems

Hi, I'm new to the board and have a couple of questions...

The other day I started my car (1999 camry) and the radio didn't work. The radio came on, but there was no power to the speakers, just a sharp crackling noise when I first turn on the radio.

Thinking the ampifier in the radio went out (I assume the amp is in the radio), I bought an aftermarket radio/cd player rather than buying a stock unit. It is a low end pioneer supertuner. I ordered the radio online and got the radio harness adapter and bezel kit and the installation was a snap.

The only problem is it's doing the same thing as the original radio. It turns on fine, but there is no sound out of the speakers, just some crackling when I first turn on the radio. I find it hard to believe I blew out all of the speakers.

Anybody have any thoughts on this one?

Thands for your help!

Re: 1999 camry radio problems

If you have a JBL (or before 2000 I think it was just called "premium" audio -- this is different from the "deluxe" 3-in-1) then there is a separate amplifier from your head unit that may have blown out.

Since you have an aftermarket unit, just bypass that amp. However, I think that cars with separate amps will have different plugs that go into the head unit, so if your harness hooked up with no problems, then ... I don't know.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply!

Now that I think about it, when I was making the adapter harness to go from my Pioneer to the factory harness in the car, I noticed that the factory radio had two more pins than the adapter harness. The adapter harness just had blanks in the corresponding slot (no pin in the connector). This might be for an amplifier. Otherwise, the adapter harness from the Pioneer radio to the factory car harness was a perfect match.

I'm going to have a look under the passenger seat to see if there is an amp there (a friend of mine suggested it might be there if not part of the factory radio).

If this is the case, I guess I can just by-pass the factory amp since my new radio is 200 watts witch should be adequite.

Thanks,
LTJ.

I don't have the premium or JBL system, so I have no idea where the amp would be. However, eeople on this forum with a gen5 Camry have their factory amp located behind the glovebox though, so if it's not under the seat, try there.

I have a problem in my 1996 camry le. I am trying to install an aftermarket radio which i got on eBay. I got all the diagrams amd connected everything with butt-splice crimps instead of a wire harness. I tried to turn on the radio but had no power. I also noticed the clock and the dome light power were out. However, the cigarette lighter is still working fine. I even undid the wires and wired it again and the same problem occurred. Any suggestions? I thought it might be the fuse, but the cigarette lighter is on the same fuse? Please help if you know anything on the subject.
