3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have 2000 stock Camry that I am probably going to get once my dad buys a new car, so I was wondering...if I post some pics or something can you guys give me any good ideas of what to do? I want to work on the engine first then the body. Any suggestions? Would it help to post up pics? Because it's completely stock. Everything...
what is it? v6 or i4? what are your goals for the car? how much money do you have to spend?
to give you a quick idea of things: you arent going to get much power out of the engine without a supercharger or turbo which will be in the thousands. you can do a nice intake and exhaust for a good sound and maybe a very small increase in power.
handling is a place where you can improve greatly: you can either go with a coilover setup or you can do some springs and struts as well as a trd rear sway bar. These will give you a HUGE improvement over stock in handling
other than that just do visual things: tints, body kit, rims are nice too, and then maybe like sound system upgrade
it really depends on what you are looking for and your price range
It's an i4...
My goal is to get as much power and handling as I can get out of it.
I am willing to spend about 2 grand on it for the first time, and then see how it is and work from there. I know that I would need a turbocharger and stuff...just the thing is That I can't find a place that has them. I checked everywhere! That's why I thought you guys could tell me some places where I can get parts for it. I want to leave it a stock look for now and work on handling and power...cuz here everyone has a camry and it's all old people and stuff. So I actually want to fix it up nicely so I can prove that a Camry could be a speed demon if it wants too...
You know what I mean? Lol
After that, do some searches on turbo and supercharger in this forum. There are a number of posts regarding those mods discussing the cost and pros/cons of each.
there are no turbo kits for us. you have to do it custom or you can just find a shop and have them do it all for you but expect to pay a lot more for that too. for 2k i would just increase your suspension and maybe intake/exhaust and leave it there. If you want power like maybe in the 200 range or so you could turbo your 5sfe, if you want more than that it would be easier to swap a 3sgte or 1mz and go from there but that would be over your budget most likely. The 5sfe supercharger is pretty impossible to find i believe so you are out luck pretty much there
I own a Camry, but I have never had enough time to look into the types of engines and stuff...so, sorry but you would have to elaborate on the engine types so I know what you're talking about. But...I know that 5sfe, 3sgte, and 1mz are all engines, still wouldn't that give me a problem if I swap it? I mean...are there any short or long-term problems that would come up after the swap? If done correctly?
-What do you have on yours?

Okay.. im gonna give it to you straight- the 5SFE (engine code for your 4cyl) in general isn't a powerhouse; will not make noticeable power in the $2000 range. That will only be for parts to turbo the car; unless its installed- turbo in the trunk doesn't really put out huge numbers. - Its a gen4/4cyl camry.. make it look nice and let it get you from A to B in style and save your money for a real powerhouse car to modify. Because- @ $4,000.. you can already pick up a used lexus sc/ls on craigslist which is a far better platform than a camry and its luxury rwd PLUS it has room to grow. Opposed to a camry turboed for $4000.
I also understand your need/urge to be different- but unless you have double digits to spend and can afford a downtime of 2-3 weeks for custom parts/install/tuning/set backs/etc... then go for it. I recently thought about turboing/swap/hybrid but there's just not enough support out there. All is custom and custom will cost an arm and a leg.
Yeah man...you aren't being a prick, you're pretty right. It's just that I have everybody around me driving like BMW and stuff...I just wanted to go out there with a fast Camry. But yea, you are right. So...what type of stylish, like exterior changes would you prefer for my stock Camry? I guess I could put that $2000 on body and make it look really nice.
^i agree with him, unless you are dead set on being different and have the money to back it, i wouldnt go that crazy with your car. I have a 1mz (which is the stock v6 engine) and im not even going to put much into it because unless i go big its not really worth and the fact that i might be trading cars sometime soon...
Yeah you guys are right...I agree. I guess I just might make it look nice and get from A to B, then when I trade into something better...hopefully a Supra, I would start from that. Thanks for bearing with me guys, and through all my automotive stupidity...Lol.
youd have to trade in ALOT of camrys to get enoguh money to buy a supra
im with xet, camry isnt the best platform and the auto 5sfe is the worst of them, depending how u look at it. i have a supercharged V6 and its not that impressive(can be, but mines not) compared to newer cars, just makes alot of noise.
honestly, id say an intake(sounds awesome) and nice non-rice exhaust, suspesnion, and looks. unless ur lookin for high hp numbers i would go further then that, but thats me.
18x8 R-1 Racing Drfit Wheels (Mass lip) on 225/45/18 Falken 912 A/S. :$1400
Mass lip is when the front and rear wheels are the same size just different offsets so the rear wheels would have a bolder lip than the front. Looks haul ass too- almost a clone of the PIAA wheels but since ur not gonna be going fast; grab these instead. Plus it wouldn't looked shoved inside the fenders. www.wheelsnext.com
dont forget suspension!
suspension makes the camry a much more fun vehicle to drive...i have TRD springs and RSB on my gen 5 and its a blast to drive now...it really makes the car feel alot less...mushy
