Trans Rebuild?

Symptoms:

Car started out every once and a while shifting real quick between 3-4 with od, or 2nd-3rd with od off. Also seemed to go to neutral until a certain RPM and would catch. This happened rarly, most other times it was fine.

When put into gear(reverse or forward) trans makes a slight noise until you start moving.

Tranny seems to allow car to over-rev. Adjusting the kickdown cable doesnt seem to make it shift harder(OD shifts hard anyway) as I saw in a guide on these forums.

Now the car:
Starts out in 2nd gear, will down-shifted if pedal floored.
CEL light on, overdrive light blinks when in overdrive.

I expect a tranny rebuild is in order? Unless someone tells me otherwise. Car has 210,000 miles, just bought car with blown engine to put a 40-60K JDM in it, gonna suck pulling it all back out again . Fluid/filter was just changed.

Also, where the hell do you find sunroof gaskets for these? Is the dealer my only option?

Thanks fellas.
Jonathan

Check your tranny codes (which blink on the O/D light after shorting a couple of pins on the OBD connector). Just maybe you can clean or replace the shift solenoid(s) to solve your problem. One of mine clogged at around 230K and I'm at 250K now with no further problems. Shift solenoids are easy once the pan is removed.

This has an OBD-II system, is there a way to get them without the reader? I think it should make it to the nearest autozone if there isn't.

The noise the car makes when putting into gear could be some sort of hydraulic fluid noise, perhaps a valve or something is not working properly. Ill see if I can't get the codes read today when I get home from work.

I just asked someone yesterday about this and said that a tranny rebuild is a pain in the ass and probably not worth the time and money. MY suggestion, get a rebuilt one

The solenoids basically are valves. Surprised it's OBD II. Didn't think they went back that far. '96???? Guess the manuals are no longer linked here. That's where I found the info. Did a search. If it's really OBD II I'm not sure this will work. With ign=ON and O/D switch=ON you jumper TE1 and E1 of the OBD connector together. If no codes the O/D light blinks steady 2 seconds. If it blinks 6 times then 2 times that's a code 62. Think 62 is #1 and 63 is #2 solenoid. 64 may be O/D soleniod. There's a procedure to test their operation if you get the code(s).

It is OBDII for sure. I just had my tranny rebuilt (same as yours) and never had a CEL from it beforehand. FYI, it cost me a little under $1600 to get it done but I was a "special case" so hopefully it won't cost you that much, if you do in fact have to get it done.

Had codes read at autozone.

500
720

Looks like just a speed sensor, going to check the wiring first though. I was messing with the plug on one and it seemed to come right off without pushing the clip. I hope it's just something as simple as that.

New Issues

Ordered the part. Speed sensor much larger in diameter than the one on my vehicle. The 4cyl engine models seem to be the right sensor. Is it possible that some moron transmission place installed a 4cyl transmission in a V6? Or is there just two different models for the V6.(though I cant find the right speed sensor unless I search the 4 cyl on autozone, or rockauto).

Thanks,
Jonathan
