3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Anyone ran open headers on there camry? feel any difference? I ran my camry with open headers and i feel more low end torque. I was wondering if anyone is running a hi-Flow catalyc? Did it make any difference?
in cant imagine how you were feeling higher low end power with open headers, with no back pressure ud loose most low end power, typically. the only thing you would gain from it is high end power. but theres no point; legaly its to loud, ull loose low end power, ull end up with cat codes which will throw the car into limp mode most likely, and it would sound like piss.
if you want better flow, highflow cat is the only way to go. it does make a differance and u still wont: A. be polluting as much and B. fail emissions.
How does it throw cat code? does the cel comes up? Im only running open headers cause my flex pipe was broken, didnt realize that my stock cat was welded on to my flex pipe. I order a flex pipe without a cat, now i have to roll like this until friday. working 12 hours a day really suck.
Anyone here runs a hi-flow cat on there car? im thinking about ordering one.
i wouldnt give ya advice about the cat thing if i didnt have one.
if you run for long the downstream O2 sensor will fualt and throw a code, more often then not putting the car into limp mode(not 100% sure with the 5sfe).
is teh flex pipe you ordered and comming on friday, without a cat? im not 100% but i believe there is a differnace in cali and fed when it comes to how many cats are on the exhaust. if its not right ull still throw a code and not pass emissions.
You also could look at ordering a cat one size up. I don't know what our cars come with factory, I'm a little new to the Camry. But if it's 2" factory, get a Random Technologies 2.25 or 2.5" cat. 2.5" factory, 3" is a possibility. But if thats a 5SFE, I'm sure 3" is a wee overkill.
Why? You can later upgrade your cat-back. Without having to replace kitty if you want higher flow. But do keep in mind, too big a size and the cat will have trouble coming up to temp.
There is no o2 sensor at the bottom of the flex pipe. i have two o2 sensor. One is at the top of the pre-cat, and one underneath the precat. I ran the car for more than 15 miles and no cel code.

Like I said, I'm pretty new to the Camry.
I guess the first q's would be- what mods do you have done, what do you plan on having done in the next year, where do you want your power (low, mid, or top?) and what do you use your car for?
Those usually are the best starts for exhaust size q's.
Oh.. Also, what is your stance on mosquito fart-can sound. You like it, or real exhaust more?
every car, at least these days, is supposed to have a down stream o2 sensor that measures the exhaust gasses after the last cat. sometimes it takes more then a week to throw a code, but liek i said, im no 100% sure with the 5sfe.
what i am sure about is if you are missing a cat and dont have an upgraded aftermarket one that compensates for that, you will NOT pass cali emissions. high flow cat or the larger oem one.

The car will be turbo by june, and once its turbo, it'll be my weekend car. I want a nice quiet ride, but i might add a apexi dunk megaphone exhaust on it. Its a maybe that i will put that in.
and bigbird, This car have 2 cat. Ones a pre-cat and ones a cat where the flex pipe and the mid pipe meet. There is no o2 sensor down there. I own a prelude before and it did had that o2 before the cat like you mention. Will the car pass the california emissions test with a high flow cat?
Assuming it's not obvious its different and it still catalizes properly.
I'm not sure how CA works, but if its just a visual concern (Random's are supposed to be pretty efficient) I'm sure a few extra $$ would help an inspector fudge their results. Don't try that till a Cali resident can say sure... I know it works here! lol... Not that we have emissions anymore or anything. LOL.
as long as it passes the sniff test then yeah aftermarket is fine. i have an aftermarket one and it passes MD state. given, CA is more strict but then again, aftermarket cats often perform better then OEM ones.
Please note: it is illegal to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter and that aftermarket catalytic converters are not legal for installation in California on OBD II vehicles (some 1994 & 1995, and all 1996 and later vehicles).

Thats from Random Technologies
Mines obd1 and cali is more stricter. I guess i'll have to smog it with a cat then run a test pipe on it afterward. But i still wanna see who have a hi flow cat on it, and if it made little difference on it.
