Engine noise upon cold start

Hello everyone. I have a 98 V4 and it makes an awful sound after I start it up. The racket continues while driving until the engine is warm. It occurs in any and all air temperatures (either 20 degrees or 100 degrees). It sounds like the AC compressor yet no AC or defrost is on. To me, it sounds like it is coming from the starter but I am not positive. Are there any thoughts about what it could be?

The AC pulley turns even though the AC is off. Maybe something to do with the compressor clutch. Don't know what you mean by "sound" or "racket". A loud squeal is often a loose belt.

Hard to tell...replaced the timing belt recently?...if not, could be the tensioner! I use to have a 96 5sfe (4cyl) in line, not V4...that made a lot of racket on startup, but quieten as it was driven...it was the TB tensioner

Thanks for the replies. I am not a car person so I didn't know I have an I4. The sound is just an incessant clanging. Its not a squeal from a belt ( I had a Saab that did that). Its not a ping or a tap. I don't know how to describe it properly. However, I will check out the tensioner and AC clutch and see if the condition resolves.
