3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
For the 1994 model year (late-1993), Toyota Camry V6 models were the first recipient of the 1MZ-FE engine. the 1MZ-FE made 3 MORE HP (188 HP) than the 3VZ-FE engine (185 HP) that it replaced.
It had a number of improvements over the 3VZ-FE engine, such as an all-aluminum block, lower friction, and OBD-II (the world's first)
Fuel economy improved marginally.
1993 (3VZ-FE) V6 was rated at 18/24 MPG
1994 (1MZ-FE) V6 was rated at 18/25 MPG
I would go with a 1MZ-FE. TRD supercharger was available and it added power. (Finding a TRD supercharger now for the 1MZ-FE is another story). The engine was designed to handle at least a mild amount of boost.
3VZ-FE was only available only from 1992-1993 model years in the U.S. 1MZ-FE was available on the Camry from 1994-2006
4th gen Camry (1997-2001) with 1MZ-FE engines produced 194 HP
1st gen Solara (1999-2003) made an even 200 HP
There are people on the forum have done a I4 to V6 swap.

I don't think brandon has ever disliked the MZ's. What he has never been able to stand was Toyota's 3.0L TRD charger, and how Toyota used it.
1992-1993 3vz-fe's have 185bhp @ 5200rpm, 195lb-ft @ 4600rpm.
1994+ 3vz-fe's have 200bhp @ 5200rpm, 204lb-ft @ 4600rpm
You can turn a 92-93 3vz-fe into a 200bhp one nearly for free.
The 3vz-fe is also a lot stronger, and easier to work with engine.
The 1mz-fe was sold for 7 years. The 3vz-fe was sold for 5 1/2 in other parts of the world. Most 3vz-fe's are also going to be low mileage JDM imports in better condition than older 1mz-fe's.
I keep reading this, but no one ever says what to do to achieve this. Is it the mods in the FAQ? (ie...The Free Mod Series) If so, which ones specifically?
These have sparked my attention, but I have yet to try them :

So can burlier sleeves be found for the 1MZ?
Weight is always a good advantage to have, particularly in the handling department, but I do like me some power.. Lol.

My stock 5SFE tranny would grenade with either one wouldn't it?
Would an MR2-SW11-Turbo tranny mate up? More a question of shifter linkage than of actual tranny matings.
So the S, VZ, and MZ families all cross-mate trannies.... Interesting... In car forms anyway.
Cool.
I know regarding the Rolla trannies they just change bellhousings, but last I checked, transaxles don't really have "bellhousings".
Cool. Yeah, these are all tenative future projects, I don't have enough income right now to deal with anything more than upkeep. lol. But I'd love to get more grunt in one.
Oooohhh... That'd be a sweet sleeper.... Throw one of the aforementioned 6's in a Terc-4wd.... Maybe see if the 3VZ-FE truck trannie will work for purpose of RWD.... hmmm.... But thats a different thread for a different day.
Soooo.......
The next item of discussion.
If one WERE to do a 3VZ, how would one deal with the spring issue? If the 1MZ is roughly 100lbs lighter than the 3VZ, where does that put the 5SFE? I know one could just order V-6 springs for the Cam, BUT.... How would the extra-extra 100lbs effect height, handling, etc. If the 3VZ only came in early Gen 3's, and I have a Gen 3.5, are the strut-perches in the towers up front or the matings to the control arm different, or could one order Coil-Overs, or go find front struts for an early Gen 3? Or do they even make aftermarket suspensory things for 3VZ versus 1MZ equipped setups?
Now, I do realize that an extra 100lbs will effect handling in terms of inertia, not my question. The question is more will the extra 100lbs worth of sag, assuming one uses the 1MZ springs, effect things adversely?

There are 5M transmissions available for the 3VZ and 1MZ engines but they are not common. There aren't many V6 Camry 5M rolling around.
Go with the 3VZ-FE
Talk with Toysrme if you are dead serious about turbo, he will get you what you want as far as information goes, and he's a damn good resource for anybody.
