Smoke, but no fire

1992 Camry station wagon V6LE. I've had this for about 10 years. Well, I parked the car for about 10 minutes and when I turned it back on - there was smoke coming from under the passenger side dashboard. The radio was crackling - lights, blinkers and windshield wipers were off. I pulled up the driveway and parked and switched off the engine. The radio continued to crackle with the key out of ignition! I popped the hood and disconnected the battery.
I was intending to replace the factory radio anyway because the CD player was skipping, so I disconnected the radio/cd unit. I didn't see any obvious burnt wires (I popped the panel under the dash) and the radio actually worked when I reconnected the battery the next day. Car started and all accessories were o.k.
Weird thing though - when I put my head by the speakers, I heard a hiss (like silence with volume turned up). This is with the radio out / disconnected!
Questions - where should I start looking for the source of the electrical short/smoke. Why is there sound coming from the speakers with the radio disconnected?

Sounds like the wire between the speaker and the radio has somehow come into contact with a live wire from something else ... vibration after a lot of miles probably...
This could be a fire hazard... so you should try to trace the speaker wire and find the problem.
