fuel soaked spark plugs- car won't start HELP!!!-95 camry
Hi,
I need major help.
1st we bought a car from someone knowing we had to have work done on it. They told us the engine had been replaced, but our mechanic saw only some head work had been done on the engine, not a full replacement. They told us the harmonic balancer needed to be changed out.
When he took the spark plugs out, fuel was shooting up towards the hood.
1) He made sure the timing belt matched as well as the notches on the harmonic balance pulley.
2) He changed the fuel regulator.
3) He took off the gas tank and emptied all old gas out replacing it with new gas.
Some battery post wires have been rerouted- which came like that when we bought the car.
After each mechanical repair, the car will crank, but fuel has to be added underneath the hood. It will run for about 30 seconds, with lots of smoke coming from the exhaust.
He has tried plugging and unplugging the (plug in , I think a fuel plug) underneath the back seats.
Seems that an incorrect fuel signal is being sent to the injectors...Possibly a faulty oxygen sensor...
Another possibility... the ECT...engine coolant temperature sensor....Idle Air Control Solenoid?
Which engine ... 5s-fe 4 cyl...automatic?
Ask your mechanic if he knows how to read the diagnostic codes ... OBD-1 type...instructions in the repair manual.

We have another camry that was wrecked that parts are being taken off to put on this 1995 camry. Is it ok to swap the sensors or would you suggest new ones?

I think it would be ok to swap parts...being cautious that the parts from the wrecked camry might not necessarily be good ones.
Try swapping the ECT sensor, maybe the oxygen sensor ...the one before the catalytic converter, and maybe the IAC solenoid...
Did you say that you replaced the fuel pump/regulator?
If you could read the engine diagnostic code, you might have a clue as to which specific part is the problem.
How is the distributor...Do the electrodes inside the cap appear to be clean...no oxide or corrosion? The distributors on these cars frequently have one problem or another...could even be the ignition coil.

My 95 camry continues to flood fuel immediately after the fuel pump is plugged in when the car is cranked. If fuel pump is unplugged, the car will crank and stay cranked briefly until the gas burns off. Once fuel pump is plugged in, the fuel continues to flood until car dies.
Could the problem be the ejector relay? The engine will not crank when this relay is removed, but when plugged back in the box under the hood the car cranks and continues to flood. This relay is different from the ejector relay on a working camry and is unable to be switched out. How can this relay be tested to find out if it is good or not?
These are the parts that the mechanic switched from the working camry but fuel flooding continued:
1. fuel regulator along with fuel rack and ejectors
2. oxygen sensor
3. ECT sensor
4. relays such as the open circuit relay behind the glove compartment
5. fuel pump
6. computer
7. complete exhaust system
8. distributor
How can one read the diagnostic code OBD-1 without the car staying cranked long enough for the check engine light to be on long enough?
What is a fuel pump regulator? Will you please submit a wiring diagram along with any helpful info to quickly get this auto to operate properly!!!!!!!
There used to be an online repair manual that was freely available for download.
There were some legal copyright issues... not sure where it is available at this time...
Possibly check the sticky posts at the top of various camry forums...
When the engine starts cold ... there is a certain set of fixed parameters ...held in ECU memory...that are used to adjust the startup idle speed....After the engine is warmed up a few minutes...the various engine sensors provide input to the ECU to adjust air/fuel ratio and injector timings...
What about replacing the IAC solenoid? ...This part has a movable vane...that can become frozen due to carbon fouling or dirt.
As I recall, the fuel pump/regulator is inside the fuel tank...
The OBD-1 instructions are in the repair manual....Any CEL code should be recorded in memory...not necessary to keep engine cranking.

Best to pickup a Haynes or Chilton service manual, the cost is under $20. Haynes is pretty good, never used the Chilton for this car. Try auto parts stores, your library may also have them for checkout or at the reference desk.
