Just hardwired my radar...

Hey guys,

Well I just hardwired my Whistler 1753 radar detector to my Gen 4 Camry. I mounted it up above the rear view mirror and hardwired it to the map light.
Ended up working out real well and you can barely see it from the outside.
I'll post some pics soon, and if anyone wants a how-to just lemme know...its real easy!

1) ground black wire to chassis
2) tap power wire to acc wire or cig lighter +
3) run wire along A-pillar and tuck into roof liner

Done.

Nice mod. I have bel 965 but I only use it on long trips. I'm too lazy to mount it every time I drive. That would be a good mod as I wouldn't have to plug it in, mount it, etc.

I too have a hardwired radar detector, but it's a cheap Cobra, and lower on the windshield (right above the dash). Does it really make any difference to have it up higher by the rear view mirror?

I can't say if it makes a difference or not, but I also have mine right on top of the dash, with the display turned off (helps at night not to be seen with it). I hate when people have theirs in the middle of their windshield with the wire coming down, looks stupid and it's just asking to get a ticket if your speeding even the slightest.

Some people say it's good and some say it's bad. I've read that having it mounted higher gives the radar detector less of a chance of detecting laser since laser is usually aimed at the license plate. If you're speeding and you get a laser warning, it's probably too late to slow down since the cop already knows your speed. Others say that mounting it low decreases the detection range of the device. So I guess each mounting locations has its advantages and disadvantages.

look up the radar detector forum (not on TN) there is a good topic there. but also just go by where it seems to work better for your application

Well here's some pics at last. The first one is what it looks like from the inside once I was done. The next two are what it looks like from the outside. I like it because you can barely see it from the outside.
Also I haven't noticed any problems with detection. Its been picking up X, K, Ka, VG2, etc within a decent amount of time to slow down.
See below for more instructions on mounting!

Ok, here's a couple pics that should help with the install...

First, there are these two screws that you must take out (right behind the hinge):

The pop off the light cover, using something like a razor blade or flat head screw driver. It comes off pretty easily without any scratching, etc. Once the cover is off, there is one more screw next to the light bulb.

Ok, for the rest of it, I didn't get a chance to unscrew everything and take more pics, but its pretty self explanatory. (If you want pics of the inside I can take some...)

First you can unplug both the cord for the sunroof (if you have one) and the cord from the map light. They are connected to the plastic housing and there is a tab that you can push to disconnect it.

After that, cut the power cord to the radar to the desired length that you want (I left some extra just in case, and there is plenty of room to store the extra behind the housing). I spliced mine to the positive and negative going to the map light.
After that, you can easily poke the power cord through the front part of the headliner so that it pops out near the rear view mirror.
Finally, plug it in to the detector to make sure it works, plug back in the sunroof power cord and the map light power corad and screw everything back in, and that's it!

Oh and just a note, there is constant power to that map light, so when you turn the car off, you have to power off your radar detector. Its actually pretty nice because I just power it on when I need it, and so far I haven't forgotten to turn it off!

Good luck, and lemme know if you guys have any more questions.

unless you have a v1, most of the time your detector is not going to detect laser, they all suck, except for the v1

x50, rx65, and sti are decent at detecting laser

either way though, you're SOL if its laser unless very lucky

so might as well mount it high and get slightly better radar range

if you have a cobra....might as well hardwire a brick up there...
