first check the fluid level and fill it with the correct fluid. It could be just a simple leak to fix .

Deffinently check the fluid first, it could be low, if it is, find out why, check for leaks. If the fluid is not low, what color is it, red, brown, black?

yeah dood the fluid should not be black. i have experienced this problem in some of my other high mileage cars. fix was as simple as changing out the tranny filter and giving it some new fluid.
