Most likely you have an after market alarm and that switch senses when the hood is open.

yeah i think its aftermarket that didnt come on the car and my grandparents wanted it so toyota put it on for them

That key looks exactly like the OEM alarm that came with my 98 Camry.
It is called SecuriKey+.
There should be a LED/Valet Switch just to the left of the steering column on th dash.
If you want the SecuriKey+ instruction manual, send me a PM with your email.
You can probably have additional keys made at a dealer.

I would connect a lamp on it. When you open the hood to do some work...

Its a bomb switch.. Good thing you were too afraid to touch it, the result could have been catastrophic!!!

pretty easy, just buy another one of those switches
buy a lamp/light you want to mount under the hood
connect the pos end of the lamp/light to the battery
connect the neg end of the lamp/light to the hood switch
mount the hood switch so that the hood pushes it down when closed
when you open the hood, the switch pops up and completes the ground, thus turning on your lamp/light
you could probably use the existing alarm one if you want, just splice in another wire so they share the same ground

Looks like a bomb switch to me...At least thats the only logical explanation I can think of.

i got one in my car when the car alarm got installed after supermarket but i touch it a couple time doesn't know what it for..but now i got it

I also have a switch but its by the radiator over flow
I also have a switch in the dash that doesn't do anything =)
