3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I got the car 1998 Toyota Camry from my local mechanic in Detroit. Now I now the car has been worked on a lot, its got an XLE tag when its really an LE and one of the o2 sensors is broken, which i am planning to replace. The car was built with the Calif. Emissions Requirement but idk if the catalytic converter is still working (its still there) or if other parts of the package are missing.
What should i look for and what kind of maintience should i do on my car before I got get it smog checked; besides fixing the o2 sensor, since i am already doing that.

do the basic tune up if you havent already. then make sure you let the car warm properly by driving it a bit before taking it in.

Don't worry about the XLE badge. It's the V.I.N. and the mileage the smog shops will look at to run the test. 1st do a full tune up i.e. plugs, plug wires, oil, oil filter, air filter, PCV valve, new o2 sensors, and trans/differential fluid (both use ATF). If the exhaust is still original, you should be fine there. After you've done all of that, make sure your tires are at proper pressure, and drive the car for about 30min to warm it up then take it in for the test. The test center will usually give you a free retest if your car doesn't pass 1st time so you can fix whatever may not be right with the car. I would do a full tune up every other year(minus the o2 sensors), and stick to the basic tune up the rest of the time.
Get a scan tool, or take it by an auto parts store to see if any DTC codes are stored in memory...even if the CEL light is not on. The oxygen sensors before and after the catalytic converter are supposed to detect a defective converter, and generate a diagnostic code.
Which engine I4 or V6? How many miles?
