3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The windshield wipers on our 1992 camry recently stopped working. I can hear the wiper motor running but the arms won't move. My local mechanic noticed the wiper bushings were cracked (split in half) and he was told by the local Toyota dealership that I'd have to buy a $200+ assembly. Has anyone experienced this bushing issue and have any advice they'd like to give? Thanks in advance....
I'm not sure what wiper bushings are either! Remove the plastic at the base of the wipers and take a look for urself! Strange problem for sure!...Pick and pulls would be ur best bet for replacement parts, plus u can learn how to take the thing apart there!

Wow, thanks for the speedy responses. Now I'm wondering if "bushing" is the right word to use. Do: rings, washers, grommets, caps, etc; ring any bells? My Haynes manual didn't touch on a solution nor offer any sound instructions on replacing any portion of the wiper arm assembly or wiper transmission assembly. With the amount heat and humidity we have here in Florida I’m not sure I’ll find any decent rubber replacements on a (’92-’96) junkyard Camry. I was hoping Toyota would have an affordable solution or some vendor would offer an aftermarket alternative. Thanks again for the swift responses - I hope I can assist you with any dilemmas you may encounter in the future.
Well hopefully this will help someone with a similar issue, my wipers didn't quit working but they were extremely sloppy due to a worn out bushing, I couldn't find anything to fix it either so here's what I did...
I went to Lowe's and found a brass bushing, cut it down so it's not so long, placed an E-clip on the outside of the 'ball-joint' that comes off of the motor arm. I know this isn't the best instructions ever but thought it might help a bit. I just did this so I don't know how long it's going to last but it sure cleaned up the action on the wipers.
I should also say that I coated the entire thing with grease to help keep it lubed a bit.
yeah, that's not too bad of a price, I was afraid on those that maybe I would get it and the busing I needed would come with the motor and not the transmission or something like that. I would hate to spend $149 and be back where I started.
Also I have the wipers rigged because the splines were worn, if I get a new transmission I would have to get new blades too!!!
If this car keeps going like it has I might do something like that, in the meantime just patching it together.

I recently bought a 92 LE that was pretty neglected for the past few years, and found a similar problem with a similar solution. Since I had many other repairs to do, I was unwilling to put out the $175 that the dealership wanted for a new transmission. I went to the local hardware store and bought a $0.30 E-clip and put it on there....that was about 2 months ago and the wipers are working fine. I'm pretty sure the size you need is 7/16".....1/2" is too big and will keep coming off. I didn't do anything with the bushing itself, other than lubing it well.
I agree that the best fix is a new transmission, but I just refuse to pay that kind of money when I really only need the little $2 plastic part...especially if I can find a creative solution that works.
I just found some at Lowe's that were about the correct size, I drilled a hole in the shaft of the motor on the part that cranks the rods that turn the wipers for the center part of the e-clip. I just needed something to hold the bushing on. My wipers still have a bit of play but at least they stay on the glass now!
