Another Gen3 bites the dust- NO NO NO! **Major update**
Well, this sure has been an interesting weekend for me... I was driving home on friday night in stop n' go traffic and my temperature needle buries in the red.. i quickly exited to the nearest gas station... let it sit for 10 minutes, and go on my merry way. Once I got back to st cloud, my temperature needle was fluctuating wildly and I finally got home and parked the cam. for the night.
Today we brought it to the mechanics and they told us that the headgasket was going and it would be around 2800 dollars in all to fix. SHIT!
My dad will not have me pay to have it fixed and he won't pay either because we have already paid 1900 dollars within the last 9 months to get new tires, struts and an alignment. So pretty much......... this sucks. I drove the camry home one last time and the smoke was just rolling out from under the hood as i pulled into the garage.

I feel for you. On a side note, I'll sell you a running 94 v6 with 205K for 2K. Comes with the whole car with bad transmission. Come to Idaho n get it.
Next time....dont keep driving without coolant! Im sure the gas station you stopped at had a water hose and coolant to fill it up. Its completely possible that a hose busted and leaked all the fluid out and your car overheated..then the head started warping and blew the gasket. May not have happened if you filled it up as soon as you could have.
Anywho...sorry for the loss.

headgasket is not a "hard" fix per se, just time consuming. Get some tools and rip off the head, as long as you don;t have to machine the block, you could repair it yourself for under 150 bucks.
If not, sorry for your loss

Yeah, it's R.I.P. for now, but my parents still haven't discussed weather or not to get a second opinion, just sell it outright, or what have you.
My coolant overflow tank, btw, was plumb full when I pulled into the gas station, so I don't know how I could have topped the coolant off without removing the pressure cap.
As far as the next car... i REALLY would like another camry, but it's going to boil down to what my parents can afford to shell out for one. I'm going to try my hardest to stay within the Toyota family though.

....My coolant overflow tank, btw, was plumb full when I pulled into the gas station, so I don't know how I could have topped the coolant off without removing the pressure cap. ....
Doesnt matter if the coolant overflow tank was full...if the pressure cap was not working properly..it wouldnt have pulled the coolant from the overflow INTO the cooling system. DO NOT rely on whether the overflow tank has fluid in it or not...ALWAYS remove the pressure cap to see if you can see the coolant.
Also...if your overflow is not normally plumb full and is usually at the line on the side, it could be that the thermostat was not opening when it should...and was forcing the coolant out of the system and into the overflow. Ive had this happen before on my Honda Accord.
Id DEFINITELY get a second opinion. It couldnt hurt.

BlueFusion, I'm in the same boat as you. My Camry did the exact same thing in February '07and has been sitting in front of my house since then. I called around and was quoted about the same for a HG job. From what the mechanics told me, it may be more than just replacing the headgasket. Such as, resurfacing the heads which is $$$. I'm sure the labor is also $$$.
i wish! a new motor around my place was ringing $1000 plus
well, for something like this, you can't always go locally....especially when you're in the states and shipping is fairly cheap....also, don't get one from a shop with a 1 year warrantee, get one from a junkyard with a 90day warrantee....if it'll run fine for 90 days, it'll run fine afterwards...generally speaking
