27-30 mpg highway? '97 LE 4 cyl w/192k

Our little '97 Camry purrs along and runs great (engine oil analysis indicates internals are strong) but mpg seems low for a 4 cyl. Just completed a trip of nearly 300 miles mostly highway @ 70-75 mph and the car got about 28 mph. This is consistent with past experience; we've had the car for a year and bought it from the original owner. Recently changed plugs and wires as well as idle speed controller. Just wondering what MPG I should be expecting with a Camry like this and if the MPH really makes a difference. Thanks! -kj-

MPH does make a difference. If you ran 60-65..you would have seen an increase in MPG.

I get about 24-25 MPG with 80% city - 20% highway in my 93 5F-SE w/ 333,000 miles on it.

The speed that you drive makes a big difference in your fuel efficiency.
At 70-75 mph, 28 mpg might be about right. Time of year is also significant ...warmer season gives better mpg. The use of the Cruise Control also helps some.
The last time I took a highway trip ...warm weather ...some luggage ... driving at 55-65 mph, I got about 33 mpg...

27 MPG AVG here with 70/30 hiway driving. Have gotten 30+ on highway trips with cruise control.

I'd think anything between 25-30 would be typical.

3rd Generation

I would say you mileage is dead on in the ball park. I get 30 mpg at a steady 65 mph on cruise control. Faster than that and I lose mileage but gain time, slower and of course, I save fuel. I usually go for 115 km/hr (71 mph). It's the best speed for me. That's winter mileage, but summer might drop because I need the a/c.

Matt

Seems about right. Just drive a little slower and you should see a slight increase in MPG. Also keep you AC off, windows up, tires inflated, and routine maintenance.
