3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi all,I'm new to this forum,But not to a Camry. I've had one for almost 2 years now. It's been drove for 6 months of that due to a bad engine and I have'nt had time or money to replace the engine. I want to get this car running again rather then just junk it. It has the "5sfe" In it. Around Houston Camry parts go for more then they should. I'm trying to stay below the $1,000 mark for a engine. I keep seeing ones on ebay from Japan but I've never heard of them or seen them used to know if they're any good. Does anyone here know where I can get a good one cheap?
BTW,My names Chuck I'm from Houston and have a '96 Camry 4DR sedan "Tripple-Tone" Green for the most part,Grey hood and blue fender. Has around 156K miles. ( I think,Been a while since I looked and I'm in Korea so I can't go look at it right now.)
How willing are you to go for more used engines? I know the ones you can find from the net and over seas are about 20- 40k miles. Would you be willing to have an engine that is at 100+ miles?

Brake lights aren't broken, I just don't brake.
--Can honestly go to a parts counter and ask for brake shoes for the front brakes.

I think I found a engine,Its in a '97 model, cant tell if its the 4 cyl. or the V6,If it is a V6,can I put it in my 4 cyl. car? I would have everything since Im getting the whole car. But would it work and how hard would it be? I know would have to change computer, tranny, crap like that. It has 145K miles.

Ahh..a whole donor car. Now that's a different story. 500 isn't bad. With a whole car, that makes it much easier when it means going form one engine size to another....can take the tranny along with the engine as a whole. I say your main concerns are the electronics and the tranny. Who is doing it, yourself or your mechanic? And find out what engine it is.

If it has the V6,will it work in my '96? A friend of mine who is a mechanic is going to do it since I wont have the time when I go one leave. Only built up a month so far. (In the army, stationed in Korea.)
I don't see why not. Having an entire donor car should make the job easier. I say have your friend check out the donor car and go for it. You may need to change the gaskets and the waterpump/timming chain/belt.

Would the fuses and relays in my 4 banger work in the 6,owner said he cant crank it because of no battery or fuses. I'm waiting for him to reply to get the VIN to run a check on,The auction ends in march,I won't get home until June. This is kind of hard, lol. I just hope everything works out.
EDIT: I just got an email from the owner,It is a 4 cyl.
