3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok so, install was a pain because the previous owner had the exhaust, up to the exhaust manifolds, welded as one piece (including the factory Y-pipe) so after cutting and welding in a flange to mount it, this is the result(plus an exhaust leak that i have to take back to fix).
i think it sounds like crap personally, i was expecting a change but not so drastic. performance is very nice says my ass dyno, low end power has suffered a little but top end is better, ill find out how good in a couple weeks it think.
in gear inside moderate acceleration: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wre7APF0qVQ
its actually louder then that, the mic was pointed foward so it got more S/C then exhaust.
the y-pipe(perviously owned by mzfe5speed)
figured id post this here in this section since it has more relevance to us.
You need a better muffler/resonator setup It actually sounds a LOT better than a lot of v6 setups I have heard, it's tough getting them to sound good.
Get a hold of two new straight through resonators and have them welded in, should cost you about $20-$30 bucks depending on the shop for labor and will make a nice difference.

1996 Eagle Talon TSI AWD: IPT 3700 restall, DSMlink v3, HKS exhaust, ETS street fmic kit
thats what i was thinkin with the resonators, that or redo the back part of the exhaust. ive always though a quad tip, dual exhaust would look good with the TRD kit on there. 2 mufflers would help to quiet it down too.
i liked how it sounded before better, it was more like a VQ the way it was, now it sounds like a 3(x)00 series GM V6...but MUCH louder.

You took the words off my mind... it sounds like a friggin Grand Am! LOL You need a nice inline resonator to smoothen out the sound.
That choppy sound is also from the fact that your Y-pipe is not equal length.. From the design, it is way unequal length, hence, you have the really raspy and lopey sound.
If you redesign your Y-pipe to a full equal length and a nice merge collector, it will sound more like a VQ or a 350Z.

That's pretty loud. Maybe some of the raspiness will go away with the exhaust leak fixed.
the leak is minor, you cant even hear it in the vids for whatever reason.

i had figured there was an issue due to the differance in legnth, but i figured it didnt really matter since many people had run with the same thing. the sound is growing on me but quieting it down is a MUST. any suggestions as to what brand resonator would be best?

mmm I agree to others comments about it sounding like a Grand AM... It didn't sound as good as the before.. But either way it is a nicer upgrade towards your piping

According to the way you described your piping, I suggest some new pipes.... And while you can't hear the leak, I think fixing it will sound different.
it sounds....interesting....outside the car, but I think it sounds pretty good inside the car with the sound resonating through the cabin....
but I agree with what other people are saying- get that exhaust leak fixed and it will sound better as well. and after seeing the pic of the y-pipe, tony took the words out of my mouth. there isn't too much that you can do about the unequal lengths though, since that's how it was designed. I think there will always be a lopiness to the sound. but that's not a bad thing either, just tell ppl you got some cams in there
