4th Generation Total amount of ATF 98 V6 Camry

Hello all! This is my first post on this forum and I hope not to sound like a total newbie to this car.

I'm currently enrolled at UTI (Universal Technical Institute) of Rancho Cucamonga and hope to become a Toyota Technician in the near future.

My dads V6 98 Camry has been sitting in the driveway for a few months and I'm now starting to work on it being somewhat better with cars. I noticed that the ATF was old and varnish looking (I believe indicating that its burnt), so a few weeks ago I drained it, dropped the pan, cleaned the magnets and pan, cleaned the filter out in some new ATF, popped the new gasket on and bolted everything back up and was on my way. The car worked fine.

Upon bringing it into lab the other day, I check the ATF again and it has become dark again. I do know that this course I have access to a transmission flush machine, but I have to supply the fluids, parts, etc. About how much fluid do I need for a full flush? Do I need a new filter as well?

there is much more fluid then what you drained, there is fluid in the torque converter. there is a way to flush it with out a mechine. unhook the cooler line from the radiator i normally undo both stick them both in a bucket, and let the engine run in nutral. once it seems its done draining. replace what you took out. theres probly about 12qts in the whole system, ask your teachers they will explain it Better then i can and probly show you. i am a tech at a toyota dealer, im electrical certified, hybrid certified and i will be going back to toyota school, (they send you for training often) for engine performance. cool shit, if you have any questions or need any type of repair manual for your toyota i have access to alot of cool shit.

by the way good luck

Toyota T-4 i believe. I drained the fluid in the pan 4 or 5 times (only about 2 to 2.5 quarts) do do a "slow flush" on my '93 to try to get some nasty fluid out of there. Its just now looking red again.. I'm sure a full flush would be good for your dad's '98 and the fluid should be nice and clean after that a probably good for a while. I would just use some quality DEX III personally. (I've just been using generic DEX/MERC for now..)
