3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The 96 Camry 4cyl will not go in drive or reverse, and when I put in drive it makes a noise near the starter. I think the transaxle is going bad. I checked the transaxle oil, it was brownish. Could the P0401 make the car not move?
or other codes?
What should check for?
How hard is to remove it? If so then how much would rebuit trans cost around in Chicago?
Rebuilt transaxles typically seem to run $1.5-2k installed at the cheapest. Think the code is for the EGR valve which I don't believe would be your problem. You say it won't go into drive or reverse but then you can put it in drive and it makes a noise? Could it have broken a CV joint so you actually can put it in gear but it just doesn't go?
p0401 allows u to drive you car, trust me, i have that code for a year now and no problem with the car driving. If its brownish oil is old/burnt and needs to be changed, also are you able to drive the car?

The car will not move when it is in Drive or reverse, and makes a noise near the starter, also the fluid has metal in it.

I will jack up the car and check the axles

Is there metal in the Tranny fluid, or in the Differential fluid? If it's the diff, then it shouldn't be as bad as doing the whole tranny...
(I'm assuming the 5S-FE tranny is similar to the 3S-FE tranny on 2nd gen camry's, with a separate Differential w/ it's own gear oil)
