94 Camry rear wheel bearing

I have a 94 Camry, 2.2L with ABS. I needed to replace the fuel fill tube so I had the drivers side of the car jacked up. When you spin the rear wheel you hear a "slight" clunking...I pulled the brakes and bearing assembly and you can still hear this when turning the flange. Again, this is not a "growling" sound like when a wheel bearing needs to be replaced but this may be how it starts. I've always thought the bearing needs to spin smooth. The dealer contends the bearing alone can not be replaced. I would replace the whole assembly but with ABS, the cheapest I can find it is $300..... I don't want to spend it if I don't need it. Any ideas...

Thanks

Funny you should ask!... I just did a DIY thread showing how to replace the rear wheel bearing:

Rear wheel bearing R & R - How to and why

I got the bearing assembly off of eBay for ~$100, including shipping.

...And yes, the noise you describe indicates your bearing is bad. The three I've replaced (counting the one on my Avalon) didn't sound or feel really bad at all. Only one of them made a slight clicking noise when I would spin them by hand.

You can get it cheap there too for ~$92 shipped with 2 year warranty. I did quite a bit of research looking to replace my own and theirs is the cheapest. I was questioning the quality since it's more than $200 less than any other place, but they are BBB affiliated and have good reviews with Bizrate so it seems it won't turn out to be crap.

Have you tried jacking up the other rear wheel and spinning it to compare?
