3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
you will need a heat gun/ dryer and some kickass double sided tape. Rears and sides are fine- the front ones is where you'll have trouble with. Not much tho- Good luck!
I would rather use a heat gun, but others have different opinions regarding fitment. I will check for myself when I get it.
excerpted from an older thread:
"For the front pieces you have to remove the tape and grind down the ridge. You have to get that pretty flat before you can reapply the tape. When you apply it to the bumper start at the outside end and pull it toward the middle. The sides are easy and they fit nicely. I had problems with the rears. Try test fitting those and you'll see what I mean. There isn't anything that you can really do about it in terms of cutting or grinding. I've heard that it helps to use a heat gun and try to mold it to fit. Maybe you should try doing that before painting. I still have some small gaps. Other than that you should be okay.
The 3M tape is the regular thick foam tape. It sticks fine just make sure you clean and prep the surface well. I had to replace the tape after about three years."
"The sideskirts usually fit perfectly, no modding here.
The front & rear lips will require the inside ridges to be filed off, but not too much or you'll create too wide of a gap in between the kit and the body of the car. I used a sander to trim them. Keep trimming and test-fitting every now and then; you'll eventually find the sweet spot for each lip. This is the only method to resolve the fitment issues."
Just an update:
The rears gave me immense difficulty
Fitment was just awful, and I still have some gaps. In addition, filing the OEM bumper to accept the black clip was pretty tough considering you're working upside down with little space.
I have it fitted acceptably at the moment. some small gaps, and the end sticks out just a tad bit..
Spoiler was easy enough, but one side stuck out slightly. a little work with the heat gun resulted in its eventual molding so it fits well now
Will update with progress on the rest as I do it (exhausted)
Oh, I have a few questions for those of you who did the install yourselves!
1) The side skirts instructions instruct me to insert a plastic tab into a factory hole under the rocker panel an inch behind the wheel. There is no factory hole. What do I do?
2) For the front lips, i'm instructed to drill through a factory hole in the wheel well to mount the lip. Again, no factory hole. (What camry do they have?? I checked another gen 4 and they didn't have any holes either haha). Would it amtter if i just ran a screw directly through a new hole?
3) What way should I proceed about heating the front to melt it into place? If i get too close to the paint, it greys and fades. Lower settings result in a lack of power to bend.
This is little more than shameless promotion to get people to answer the questions in my above post. I don't have actual pictures of the work I did yet...but I will get them up soon enough.
