99 Rear Wheel bearing question - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums

I have a 1999 camry 4 cyl. with a howl coming from the rear end, when the car is running between 20 and 60 mph. I was told that the "hub assembly" needed replacing rather than just a wheel bearing. I do not have abs brakes.

Is this a $80 buck, or a $180 part and how long should it take for a shop to fix it? I was quoted $ 550 per wheel, which seems awful high.

Is that price quote from a Toyota dealer's shop? The genuine Toyota part is ~$300. You can get one from NAPA for ~$240. Or, you can get it on eBay for ~$100.

It took me about an hour to replace mine, and I'm slow.

So yeah, I'd say $550 seems high. Even with a $300 part, they're charging $250 for what should be about a half hour job, IMHO.

The dealer list is $316.95 the part number is:
42410-33040, Wheel Hub Assembly
The bearing come sealed inside the hub assembly, so you cant just change the bearings. If you don't want to do it yourself call around and get some prices from other shops. The labor time for changing them is .8 hours per side or 1.4 hours for both sides so it will depend on the shops labor rate. $550 per wheel is extremely high.
