4th Generation MPG Estimates

As gas prices have increased so has my interest in increasing my MPG. In previously checking my MPG I would average around 28-30 MPG. That was simply driving normally. I drive 60% highway, 40% city, and 60 miles round trip to work. So, on this last tank I was determined to see what the max MPG could be. I filled up with the fuel guage on 1/4 tank, 412.7 miles. It took 11.504 gallons to fill it up. So, I got 35.87 MPG. I was pretty happy with that. I was considering looking at a smaller car (like a late 90's Honda Civic), but I feel like 35 isn't too bad. I did not go over 70 MPH and did very slow acceleration and very little idling. I recently did the Seafoam/throttle body cleaning, changed my transmission and differential fluid, and power steering fluid. I am pretty sure the power steering fluid made all the difference in MPG. I have also started using www.fueleconomy.gov to track my MPG, cost, and see what others are getting from their cars. It is a very informative site. I am new to the boads, so, I wanted to make my first post a positive one. Thanks for all the info thus far.

Wow. 35mpg from a camry.

One thing to do, if you haven't, is change the Oxygen sensor. I had mine in for 209,000 miles. There was no CEL. When I changed it, I noticed a big difference in throttle response and gas mileage.

I too have the auto i4 and I get around 22mpg. I cannot wait until winter is over so I can get some better mileage.

Winter in Nebraska is hard, one day it's snowing, the other it's raining, the next day it's 60* outside.

My milage has really suffered this winter as well. Winter car warming + spinning tires in snow = worse milage

In the summer, though, I do about 50% highway driving and get 28-30mpg. I almost always try to maximize my mpg, but there's only so much you can do with a V6/auto.

I'm going to get one of those ScanGauge II things though - will see if I can adjust my driving further to eke a bit more out of it

Does anyone know how much of an increase you can expect from a header on the 4cylinder Camry for gas mileage? I have been told by a Toyota mechanic that the k&N drop in filter is bad because the oil on the filter gets in the Mass air flow sensor and screws things up, so I am staying away from that.

I was considering maybe some springs but I don't think that affects anything but quality of ride rather than what eibach states in a Car ad. Wheels of course can help if I increase the diameter of the wheel and tire combo, however doing that would involve 18 inch wheels and taller side wall tires. LOTS OF DOUGH!! I'm not interested in spending that much money on something that won't have much of a return.

I would like improve my mileage without sacrificing dependability(I plan to run this car until it is on its last leg). Currently the car is at 162K miles. Runs like a champ and all I want to do is make the mileage better.

At the current time I am getting between 19-22mpg per tank. I drive 80% in town and 20% in town. I am driving conservatively now with gas prices going up uP UP!

If anyone has any pointers, please let me know. Thank you ahead of time.

I saw somebody on another forum use the term hypermiling the other day. I had never heard that term before so did some searching and came up with this CNN article.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/01/Auto..._mpg/index.htm

Essentially, their tests show that you can get up to 35% better mileage by driving like a granny. I always knew that was better for mileage, but didn't know it could be that much better. With prices what they are, I may have to do a little more granny driving.

Best I've gotten out of the 00 Camry i4 auto is 400+ miles on one tank from LA to San Francisco. I can easily get 32 MPG if I take the time to slow down when I drive.

26.5 MPG mixed City/Hwy. Not great, but can't complain. I can still get over 30 MPG on long trips.
