odd thing i noticed today on my fuel gauge

i was at a stoplight and it went down. all the way to the little gas picture. and then slowly, and i mean slowly it started to move up as i was driving.

first time ive seen this happen (ive only driven it about 100 miles tops though..just got it)

anyone know why this happened? is this a problem?

it might be from your fuel level sending unit.

3rd Generation

Sounds like the level sender float is sticking, and when you go to stop, the gas in the tank sloshes around enough to bring the sender float down pretty low. How much gas is in the tank?

I know that when I go up/down steep hills or in and out of my work's parking garage, my fuel gauge goes down a bit (sometimes 1/4 of a tank) then slowly comes back to where it was when I was driving level.

I don't know if the sender is attached to the fuel pump assembly, but on some cars it is, and would be as simple as removing the fuel pump by removing the rear seat and the cover is very visible.

well the tank is half full, and it went ALL the way down. like past the empty line. and its never done this before in the little time ive had it. i was on a pretty level ground btw. but its only done this once i dont really think its much of an issue (i hope)

correct.

its located on top of the gas tank. remove the rear bottom portion of the seat then you should be able to see it.

This is the fuel pump and sending module from a 1995 I-4 Camry. The top is to the left.

I believe the square black looking thing on the right is the float. As it goes up and down I believe it turns a rod which is "read" by a sensor and a resistance value is sent to the gauge or ECM to display the level. There could be a mechanical problem or a wiring problem.
