Noisey Valve Train 1993 Camry 2.2

I'm glad I joined this Forum !

Anyway, I have a 1993 Camry 2.2 automatic LE Wagon. It runs absolutely perfectly, however, it sound noisey in the valve cover area, as though the valves are out of adjustment.

Please advise as to how to make a correct determination, and what to do about it.

Thanks in advance !!

A rattling noise can be poor oil delivery to the cam area. Either low oil, poor distribution (clogged passageways or too thick oil) or low oil pressure (bad oil pump or ?). Knocking could be too low octane gas (are you using discount gas or name brand?). First I'd check the oil level and make sure that you have the right viscosity for your area. Second, I'd try a premium gas just to eliminate the possibility of knocking. Then I'd pop the valve cover and verify that everything was clean and oily (Buy the replacement gaskets - valve cover & spark plug tubes - first. Take plenty of pictures. Don't over tighten the spark plug tubes when reassembling.)

Even if the valves / cams were out of adjustment I don't believe that they would make any additional noise. I would expect a performance change. I am not certain though.

The 5SFE has always made a little noise.

Use a piece of hose to run down the area of the noise. If valve train the cover is easy to remove and the clearance can be checked. The engine uses shims to adjust the clearance making adjustment a little more difficult.

I took the oil filler cap off while the engine was running, and there was oil flying all around, so I will assume oil is getting up there just fine.

the noise is indeed coming from the cam area. does anyone have a tutorial for adjusting the valve clearances? thanks again.
